Dear Rosa, dear all,
the budget proposed by Rosa still looks reasonable, even if it goes beyond a bit what we have received. We can always try to save on some of the items to cover others. But my main concern is that I have not received the budgets from the other regions. I think that on the basis of the limits we have (which by the way, are not low) Josephine, Martha and our colleagues in Asia should be sending their own budgets.
Below I am including some basic ideas for the concept note, as included in the funding proposal (with some changes as we had planned one tribunal and we are now planning to organise 4):
International Women’s Tribunal on Poverty.
Aims: Governmental pressure/political impact/increased visibility:
Character: Global in scope with 4 localised activities: 4 tribunals in New York, Egypt, India and Peru.
To coincide with the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty events, the plan is to hold one international tribunal and three national (or regional) ones. They will consist of a panel of judges formed by international (national or regional) representatives from civil society, international recognised personalities and high profile human rights activists. A preliminary list of proposed names include: Amartya Sen, Mary Robinson, Kofi Annan, Carla del Ponte, to name a few.
Framework: use best practices (Peru-international tribunal, Jubilee South, international tribunals on violence against women-CWGL)
Issues: racism, liberal model, extreme wealth
I hope these ideas will be enough to start planning the activity. Josephine, please communicate with Marie-Ange (gcap.africa en gmail.com) as she has added all the African focal points from various countries to the FTF list and is willing to support the work towards the 17 October.
Greetings to all,
Ana

Dear Ana, Lysa, and colleagues
Thanks for this information. I support the idea of developing a concept paper for the IWTP and ensuring we are unified in our messaging and purpose for the events. I can certainly work with Ana on the paper and get your inputs as well. I think the collaboration in Asia sounds great! I will work to ensure we can get that type of support in NY with some of our partners, but it sounds like Asia is ahead of the game.
In terms of the budget, I think fundraising is in order. I would retain the 2 persons from the South to NY because we need to ensure there are Southern voices, at least from other countries where we are not planning an IWTP. We need to ensure it is not Northern people living in poverty even though it is in NY. The budget for the Coordinator would need to be increased, and I’ve talked to you, Ana, about this. Unfortunately the costs in NY different than for other regions and the current amount would cover an intern to assist but not adequate for a part-time coordinator. I would also move the Office Costs to the category on Coordination rather than Media on top. These are coordination costs either as communications or a separate line item. The administrative percentage should be 10% which is standard rather than setting an undesirable precedent at 5%. I’ve attached an amended budget for your review.
I think we could also resume a conversation around collaboration with the International Women’s Tribune Center around the cyber-dialogues. They have proposed this before –Mavic Cabrera was going to present it to us formally in Nairobi but had to cancel. I could revisit this again with them. It would provide media coverage, link up to the internet and local radio stations. Do I have the go ahead to do this?
More updates in a separate message.
Warm regards,
Rosa

Subject: About the women's tribunal
Dear friends, queridas amigas (español abajo)
Following Lysa's message I think it will be possible for Rosa and myself to develop a concept on the basis of what we have included in the general proposal. I have to coordinate with Rosa and we will agree when we will be sending it to you all.
In terms of budget, you will certainly recall that we had asked for USD 122.000 to implement all what we have agreed upon at the Nairobi meeting. We have received USD 50.000 and in one of our calls we decided that we would prioritise the Women's Tribunal.
I have prepared now a new budget which I am sending for your comments. We will need later to do more fundraising for the other plans that need to be left out for the time being, like the evaluation meeting, but at this stage we need to make sure that we can implement the tribunals in the four planned locations.
I have basically kept the budget for the New York tribunal, only taking out one witness from the South (there were originally two and now there is one, as there will be other tribunal taking place in the South). Then I assigned funds for each of the other three tribunals, giving a bit more to India as there has been clear indication that you will be working as a region.
I would very much appreciate your comments, tell me if you think this distribution makes sense, if you have any other suggestions. I would very much appreciate it if you ALL answer, so we can move forward with the preparations.
Thanks to all!!!
Greetings,
Ana
Amigas,
Ana

Dear Ana, Rosa, Pam & Chona
Hello again! Just to update that I have put forward our proposal to support the organizing of the IWTP on October 17th to the Steering Group and would be hearing from them by the end of this week. However there are few more details that we need to work on to be able to plan towards the proposed event:
1. Concept: As you have mentioned in your mail to Nisha, it would be important to have a concept note that outlines the overall issues, objectives, and expected outcomes of the IWPTs and serves as the basis for the efforts in each region. I wonder if it would be possible for Ana & Rosa to develop a 1-2 page background that can be adapted to the context of each region? For instance, Pam could take the lead in facilitating an Asia Core Group which can detail the politics and profile of the IWPT in Asia and develop a guiding document for the region accordingly?
2. Budget: It is wonderful to see the interest to make this a regional event, however that has huge implications in terms of the resources available. It would be important to know how much is available through the FTF at this stage and compare it with an estimate of costs that Chona & myself could work out (based on the projection of no. of participants, nature of event outlined in the concept note(s). We would then need to make a realistic assessment of the resources if we can raise over the next 2 months itself in order to be able to develop the IWPT as a regional event, or whether we need to settle for a primarily national event with a few representatives from relevant countries.
3. Logistics: Once the basics on the Scope & Resources of the event are clarified, we could accordingly invite key groups in India to form a sort of Hosting Committee / Local Organizing Committee. A first meeting of the LOC could be jointly called by NAWO & WNTA and possibly in the last week of July itself, if we are clear about proceeding on this event.
These are some thoughts on my end in relation to what we need in order to move forward.
I am also copying this to Amitabh in his role as the Convenor of the India Campaign, as well as Marivic & Amitabh who are the IFT members from Asia for their information & inputs.
Best regards,
Lysa John, WNTA
