Celebrate March 8, International Women's Day
Dear FTF friends,
Happy International Women’s Day from New York! I'm sending a very special
greeting to you all on the facilitation team and Ana in particular to say,
"Hurray! Let's celebrate!" But also to say great work, thanks for all the time
and investment into supporting this endeavor! I mean what I say in my other
message that I'm so grateful to Ana and Alejandra and celebrate with them in
our achievements. We have GCAP focusing on International Women's Day!
Although the road has been not always smooth, we have cause for celebration and
affirmation that our work has not been in vain. My hope is that breaking
through to some mainstream organizations and networks in GCAP, we can move
forward in working to integrate women's issues in the other days of mobilization
this year. Most of all, I wish for more of a sense of peace with the FTF
within GCAP and a moving forward in a more positive way. So, thank you all
again. You've all worked very hard leading up to March 8th and I really hope you
will remain engaged throughout the year!!!
Below I am including the message I sent on the GCAP list serve, in case you
missed it, about what we are doing at the UN. We have printed post cards to
the Secretary General (S-G) and so far this morning have collected already
over 100 signed post cards of about 380 distributed. Some will be mailed by
post, some will be picked up later, so we will have many, many being delived to
the S-G!!!. So I ask, please, please send your e-cards from afar to show our
scope and our depth! They are attached her in Word format. Clip and paste
and type your name, organization and country into the text box. So send
your e-card NOW, TODAY!
It's been my pleasure working with you all and I look forward to more
engagement down the line.
Many hugs to you on this our day,
Rosa
8 March, International Women's Day, A Day of Mobilization
What’s so wonderful about International Women’s Day is taking the time to
celebrate, taking time from the work and “struggle” of it all to honor
women. So, today I join Alejandra and Ana in celebrating the gains of the
Feminist Task Force, and voice my sincere appreciation in working with them and all
of you over the past couple of years in this endeavor.
At the United Nations in New York, we are calling for gender justice and
urging the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and member states to make gender
equality a priority. On Tuesday at the Informal Thematic Debate of the General
Assembly on the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women, the
Secretary General pledged “to work for a collaborative and coordinated
approach to gender perspectives,...." He also mentioned that member states had
been:
“studying proposals to strengthen the UN’s gender architecture, as
presented by the High-level Panel on United Nations System-Wide Coherence. I hope
you will consider the possibility of replacing several current structures with
one dynamic UN entity, focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Such an entity should mobilize forces of change at the global level and
inspire enhanced results at the country level.”
Today at the Commemoration of International Women's Day 2007 Panel on
"Ending Impunity for Violence against Women and Girls," the S-G repeated his
commitment (see UN webcast: _http://www.un.org/webcast/2007.html_
(http://www.un.org/webcast/2007.html) )
Women have been signing the FTF postcard to the S-G reminding and urging him
to support the review and strengthening of the UN’s gender architecture.
We are calling for:
· the Gender Equality Recommendations of the report of the High
Level Panel on Coherence Panel be adopted, including:
o the establishment of an independent women-specific entity at the
highest level and with Under Secretary General (USG) leadership;
o the new women’s entity be fully and ambitiously funded;
o an open and inclusive process to consult with women’s rights
groups.
Even if you are not in New York, you can do your part by sending an
e-postcard to the Secretary General and/or the UN mission of your country. The March
8th campaign materials are designed to be simple and inexpensive so that
every person can take personal action by sending at the minimum an e-mail
message. Anyone reading this message through a computer can proceed to send an
e-postcard to the S-G or their ambassador.
* E-cards, e-mails, SMS/text messages –
* Send a message to the Secretary General and/or the UN mission of
your country by using the “Gender Equality to End Poverty” e-card templates to
personalize your e-card (sample e-card attached in Word format).
