Dear friends and colleagues,

*World Poverty Day* on 17 October is coming closer, and I would like to
invite you to join UNIFEM on that day in raising public awareness on the
issue of women and poverty.

UNIFEM has joined forces with the Women's Funding Network (www.wfnet.org),
an umbrella for some 120 women's funds worldwide, to call for greater
investment in women to overcome global poverty. At the centre of our joint
activities is participation in the United Nations' Millennium Campaign
"Stand Up against Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals" (more
info: www.standagainstpoverty.org). To channel our call to overcome women's
poverty into the campaign, we have developed a small website through which
we will encourage people to stand up online and get informed on the issue of
women and poverty. The site has just been launched in English, French and
Spanish at: www.womenfightpoverty.org

In addition to the website, we are developing an e-card (an electronic
postcard) that will ask people to join the online stand up and provide a
direct link to the sign-up form. The e-card will be ready for distribution
just before Poverty Day and we will let you know as soon as the card is
available.

I very much hope that you will reach out to your networks to mobilize as
many people as possible and help raise awareness on the fact that women are
not only deeply affected by poverty, but also hold enormous potential to
help overcome it.

We hope that on World Poverty Day we can show the world that there is an
extensive and very active movement in support of eradicating women's
poverty.
