Dear colleagues,

Regarding the UNCTAD symposium (another agenda item for Tuesday's conference call), please see the trail of information below. I'm proposing that Luisa attend on behalf of the FTF to support Diana Aguilar's (IGTN/WWG) presence there. Let's discuss on Tuesday.

Best,
Rosa

Dear Friends.

Elisa Peters of NGLS has written to find out if there was anyone from among us who might be able to speak in behalf of the WWG on FFD at the UNCTAD symposium (see below, point 3 of Elisa's original email). We're not sure but we think that NGLS might be able to fund at least one person from our group.

Thanks,
Gigi and Marina

3- UNCTAD, in cooperation with NGLS, is organizing a public symposium on "the global economic crisis and development - the way forward" on 18-19 May 2008 in Geneva (see flyer attached). It is an effort to mobilize civil society, governments, agencies and other actors around the key issues on the crisis that have not received enough attention if at all. Building support for the Stiglitz Commission recommendations and a successful outcome of the UN Conference in June are among core objectives of this initiative.

Key topics which will be debated at 3 plenary sessions of the symposium are:
The global economic crisis - its causes and its multiple impacts The debate will consider, in particular, the effects on developing countries in the areas of trade, investment, food security and jobs;
Assessing existing responses to the crisis at the international, regional and national levels - limitations and best practices In addition to examining the effectiveness of stimulus packages implemented in some countries, the debate will address multilateral efforts to find solutions to the crisis, including the G-20 Summit outcome and regional initiatives;
Proposals for the way forward - obstacles and opportunities The debate will include opportunities arising from the upcoming United Nations conference on the world financial crisis and its impact on development, and longer-term issues such as the reform of the international financial architecture and global economic governance.

Mr. Hamish Jenkins (hamish.jenkins en unctad.org) in our Geneva office is leading NGLS' involvement in this meeting. If you have questions about it please be in touch with him.
 Dear Diana,

We are pleased that you will be able to participate in the UNCTAD Public Symposium on 18-19 May 2009.

I had a conversation with Simonetta Zarrilli and Hamish Jenkins this morning on organizing a break-out session on the impact of the crisis on gender on the first day of the Symposium between 2.15 and 3.45 p.m.
Would you be interested to co-organize the break-out session with UNCTAD, ILO (TBC) and other organizations interested in gender related issues. If you have any further suggestions, please share them with us.

We will be sending a message to some civil society organizations and other international and UN organizations to inform and invite them to this additional break out session.

Should you need any further information, please let me know.

Best wishes.
Amel
