Subject: press release from Egypt August 16, 2013 Press release From a coalition of Civil Society and Human Rights organizations in Egypt The right of peaceful assembly or the right of terrorismEgypt is currently witnessing severe incidents threatening the security of the country, citizens and public &private property and paralyzing all aspects of life in the majority of Egyptian cities, after the Egyptian authorities has broken up the armed Sit-ins Rabaa Adawiya and El Nahda Square, based on public pressure demands the Egyptian government to broke up the sit-ins due to the serious human rights violations, which resulted in there.A large number of organizations signing this statement have already issued another statement on the third of August 2013 stating the violations committed by these sit-ins against the vast majority of the Egyptian people, which included the violation of the right to housing, the right of freedom of movement, the right of not being arbitrary arrested, the right to work, the right to freedom of opinion and expression, the right to be free from fear and intimidation, the right to physical safety, The right to freedom from torture, the right to live, and a long list of other rights violated by these Sit-ins. Moreover, The Amnesty International has stated in a report earlier this month, cases of torture, murder and other serious violations that took place in these Sit-ins and demanded an investigation about it.If the international conventions had committed the state to respect human rights and not to violate it, the international covenants on human rights has also placed obligations on the State to protect citizens from any violations carried out by any third party otherwise the state becomes in flagrant violation of these conventions and the rights of its citizens. In addition, it has already proven beyond any doubt, that these Sit-ins and the demonstrations going in and out of them committed severe violations of human rights for a large number of Egyptian citizens came to the extent of murder and torture. The undersigned organizations see that the security forces had committed to all international standards in resolving Rabaa El Adaweya and El Nahda Sit-ins, which took them long hours to break up sit-ins especially in Rabaa El Adaweya sit-in the most numerous. Keen not to cause significant loss of life. Moreover, the losses that occurred in the lives were far less than the estimations. What caused the number of deaths is the use of number of the protestors in Rabaa Adawiya of firearms in the face of the security forces resulting deaths and injuries on the part of the security forces, which led the forces to defend itself, and there is documented testimonies to those who attended the processes of the Sit-in break proving that violence started from the sitters themselves.Following the resolution of the Sit-ins the Muslim Brotherhood expanded in violations, they set fire, destroyed & ruined more than forty Church, Monastery & school of nuns & other properties of Christian citizens. It has also raided a number of police stations and killed the officers and soldiers who were on duty in a terrible way, as happened in the Department of Kerdasa Giza Governorate. They also set fire to large areas of the Governorate of Cairo, Burned and destructed public property, including the Ministry of Finance and the Giza governorate building. In addition to the Terrify and intimidation used by the group in their demonstrations in the streets including of firing randomly and attacks of citizens in the streets to the extent of killing as happened in Alexandria, Giza and other governorates which is documented by videos. So far, the security forces committed to the utmost restraint toward the violations committed by the Muslim Brotherhood, which has threatened repeatedly to burn Egypt, which sparks fury of the vast majority of the Egyptian citizens who suffer from violations of the Muslim Brotherhood, this majority sees the restraint committed by security forces gross negligence in protecting them from terrorism practiced by the group. The Sit-ins and demonstrations of the Muslim Brotherhood has surpassed peaceful long time ago, but they were not peaceful at any time, and if the international law of human rights ensures the right of peaceful assembly, it is certainly beyond any doubt did not give the right to assemble armed, and did not give the right to group of citizens to terrify & torture others or attack police stations and killing policemen who are, or deliberate sabotage of public and private property. Therefore, the undersigned organizations emphasize the following points:- The sit-ins and demonstrations of the Muslim Brotherhood are not peaceful, but it is armed demonstrations and sit-ins and does not conform to the standards of the right to peaceful assembly, which is recognized by international conventions.- What the Muslim Brotherhood practices falls under the definition of terrorism, and that it is the duty of the state to protect citizens from abuses practiced by the group otherwise the State will be in flagrant violation of its duties responsibilities as per the international conventions.- There are Arab & Western media supported by foreign governments who grossly distort the facts in order to open the door to foreign interference in Egypt's internal affairs. In addition, there are states that are supporting terrorism practiced by the Muslim Brotherhood. This is considered a serious violation of the Declaration of inadmissibility of interference in the internal affairs of the countries of the United Nations on December 9, 1981- The position of these countries towards Egypt for political purposes and not human rights purposes makes the Egyptian authorities unable to carry out their duties in dealing with the terrorism carried by the Muslim Brotherhood, due to criticism and attack from these countries and their governments that puts the Egyptian authorities between the hammer of the Muslim Brotherhood terrorism and the anvil of the popular anger of not confronting terrorism as needed- The position of the counties defending the terrorism of the Muslim Brotherhood is hypocrite not built on facts about this group but on the political and economic interests of these countries that counts on the survival of this group in the political scene in Egypt and other countries of the Middle East. People in the region are the one who pays for that from their security & stability. In addition, the international community has to abandon this hypocrite situation and has to describe the Muslim Brotherhood characterization with the correct name as an armed terrorist group, not a political or religious group.- The Egyptian people have the right to self-determination, which is stated in the Article one for the two Covenants on Civil and Political Rights and the economic and social rights. The tens of millions that came out in 30th of June have defined the demands of these people. And it is not the right of any of these countries to interfere in the will of the Egyptian people and their right in self-determination Signatories of the statement1. Arab Office for Law2.
