The major thrust of the peacebuilding cyberdialogues will be womens efforts to implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1325, a landmark document that marks the first time the UN Security Council addressed the disproportionate and unique impact of armed conflict on women and recognized their contributions to conflict prevention, peacekeeping, conflict resolution and peace-building. This same document stressed the importance of womens equal and full participation as active agents in peace and security. The cyberdialogues represent an important link in grounding the connection between policies proposed at global level and realities confronting women at the local level. How will the global town hall meeting take place through the cyberdialogues? The cyberdialogues are a series of interactive discussions using Internet voice chat and/or audio visual teleconferencing to connect women from Africa and Asia-Pacific, who are working on human rights and peace building issues with gender advocates in Europe and North America as well as policy makers who are participating in the UN Security Council meeting in October 2005. When and at what time are the cyberdialogues going to be held? The cyberdialogues will take place on October 27, 2005 from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. (US Eastern Standard Time). We understand that the time difference is a great challenge for those who are in Asia-Pacific but we want to make sure that we are able to get members of the Security Council and other policy makers to sit on the peacetable with women working on peace and security issues at the national and community levels--at the time that the UN Security Council meeting is taking place here in New York. Will there be another peacebuilding cyberdialogues at the AWID International Forum? The peace building cyberdialogues on October 27, 2005 will be organized as a workshop at the AWID International Forum in collaboration with Isis WICCE. The AWID International Forum is a significant venue to hold the peacebuilding cyberdialogues as it is expected to draw over 2,000 participantsacademics, policymakers, and programme plannersfrom around the world. This is also part of IWTCs efforts to ensure that more womens voices are heard in discussion spaces on peace and security issues. What happens after the cyberdialogues? The cyber dialogues are not one-off events. The discussions during the actual cyberdialogues, will be recorded and edited to produce English and local language radio programmes that will be aired in community radio stations in different parts of the world--especially in conflict and post-conflict areas--in partnership with members of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC). The radio programmes will ensure wider outreach for the outcomes of the cyberdialogues and will greatly contribute in raising awareness of UNSCR 1325 and how women can use this at the national and community level. IWTC plans to hold another series of English and French peace building cyberdialogues during the UN Security Council meeting in 2006. Are the cyberdialogues a media campaign? The cyberdialogues is part of a continuing initiative to develop a core group of community radio broadcasters, print journalists, and other media practitioners who will ensure an on-going flow of information to women at country and community level regarding the use of a global policy like the UNSCR 1325 as well as the existence of new legal mechanisms and how they can be used to protect and promote womens interests at country and community level. How can you participate in the cyberdialogues? There are different ways by which you can participate: - by identifying and facilitating the setting up of dialogue sites; - by identifying/suggesting key discussants; - by participating in the actual dialogue--logging in and becoming one of the key discussants - by publicizing the cyberdialogues; - by becoming a partner in the local language radio programmes - by contributing funds to support the setting up of dialogue sites and radio programmes; and -by airing the radio productions (for radio broadcasters).
