The plan was to invite live cases of women living in extreme poverty, those experiencing injustices and violence, and bring those cases to the surface. A jury was formulated from academics and university professors, social work professionals and religious leaders who will listen to those cases, analyze their situation, and come up with the root causes. Participants in this tribunal were about 101 decision makers, religious leaders, women of all disciplines, business men and women, government officials, two women from Beirut, Lebanon and NGO representatives. Those positively participated in elaborate discussions. In addition, two documentary films were presented, one, exposing extreme poverty in one of Cairo slums (a heart breaking documentary), and the other presenting some positive actions against women poverty taken by the National Council of Women in terms of providing basic education and vocational training to women and girls. Tribunal Proceedings Two women cases from Upper Egypt and one case from Lebanon were presented (photos attached). The first case was a girl who was brought up in a large family who educated the boys and neglected the education of girls due to family unable to support them in schools. In addition, because of their family size, they were kept at home for domestic hard work until she gets married to a fellow that she did not chose, then the family is relieved from her financial burden. The second was a woman who educated herself till she got her diploma, then decided to open a class for girls like her who dropped out from schools and did not get a chance. Then she opened an NGO, registered it, and is trying to help women and girls in training them on several vocations. There was a third case about a woman that was subject to violence when the man comes home bankrupt, unable to support his family, feels the shame and starts to beat her severely in front of her children. But she was too shy to present her case. The fourth case was from Lebanon about how can war contribute to women's poverty when their husbands and sons are gone to war. Investors leave out the country and factories close, educated youth and good brains are forced to leave the country seeking security and safety in a dream land, unemployment of men during war situations increase the financial burden on women who have to provide for their families getting very low salaries. Also, the war resulted in the transformation of development programs into rescue program, and lead to the deterioration of the people's health and well being. The two documentary films were presented to the audience who were overwhelmed by the extent of poverty living in one of the suburbs of a cosmopolitan area like Cairo. Reflecting on these cases, the jury started to analyze the cases tackling the following themes: Lack of capacities and skills of women resulting from the lack of education Lack of opportunities due to inequality of treatment between the two genders Lack of social awareness of the families and lack of human rights education Globalization, unfair economic policies, and increase of international prices reflecting on local markets and worsening the poverty situations of the poor. Poverty as a complex phenomena Mthat requires mechanisms to fight it at different levels Extensive discussions took place as there was a positive interaction between the jury and the participants. Recommendations about the outcome of the tribunal were drafted and will be raised to the people's assembly (through a woman parliamentarian) Recommendations: Poverty fighting mechanisms should include comprehensive confrontation of the root causes of poverty for its eradication. Direct and quick actions to alleviate the psychological, social and economic consequences of poverty and try to let the poor out of its vicious circle and empower them through education and vocational training Treatment of the poverty issues will require a comprehensive planning stemming from a global strategy but implemented based on local interventions On the economic development area, work towards decreasing unemployment rates and make good use of the human and material resources. On the educational and capacity building track, ensure equity in education and bridge the gender gap in this area, fighting illiteracy and bridging the gap between urban and rural areas especially for the girl child and develop the school curricula and teaching methods.
