She is an expert in the field pf Popular Education with special attention to Environmental Education and Women’s/ Gender Issues for learning processes. In the 1970s Moema worked in the rural areas of the north east of Brazil with groups dealing with adult education, health and social service. In 1973-74, she worked as a research assistant for a team of anthropologists at the University of Manchester. After 1975 she began to focus on women’s issues, especially within the Latin American context, namely Bolivia, Peru, Haiti, Santo Domingo, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Brazil. In 1980, she started in Brazil Rede Mulher de Educaчуo (Women’s Network) which promotes feminist popular education across the country and collaborated to promote women’s issues in the Americas and Internationally. Participatory Research projects, training, publications, communication tasks facilitated the mobilization of thousands of womens in different countries in different approaches. In 1983, Moema began to promote an educational approach to environmental issues. She was the responsible for the creation of the Environmental education Department of CETESB (State Establishment for Sanitation and the Environment) in Sуo Paulo – Brazil. In 1987, Moema was invited to foster the Environmental in the establishment of the Women’s School of Environmental Education within UNIFEM Program (Women, Environment and Development), in Brazil. In 1992, Moema coordinated the “International Journey of Environmental Education” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as coordinator of LEAP – Learning for Environmental Action Program of ICAE – the International Council for Adult education. This journey coincided with the first meeting of the international team of LEAP, consisting of people from 68 different regions (Africa, Asia e South-pacific, Caribbean Area, Europe, North America and South America). In the context of Rio 92/Global Forum, Moema facilitated The ONgs Treaty on Environmental Education for Sustainable Societies and Global Responsibilities”. She coordinated this work in a very participatory way with a brazilian team of educators and the ICAE’s Environmental Education Programme. The treaty, considered by the steering committee of the International ONGs Forum the best in the methodological approach, was approved by approximately 500 educators and environmentalists. In 1993 – 1994, as part of the continuity of this work, Moema was the co-founder of the brazilian Instituto ECOAR (Institut of Citizenship Echo), a NGO dedicated to environmental education, directed to the different social actors: policy makers, planners, media, schools, civil society organizations. In the same time, she co-coordinated, with Dr. Budd Hall, from OISE – Ontario Institute of Studies on Education, in Toronto/Canada and Professor Leesa Faucett, from the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University, Toronto/Canada, a project called “Transformative Learning Through Environmental Action”, consisting on different theoretical approaches and case studies, linking theory in practice, with people from 6 different regions (Asia/India, Europe/Germany, North America/Canada, Central America/El Salvador, South America/Venezuela and Brazil, Africa/Sudan). The special approach of the project was: “transformative learning through environmental action in food production”. From 1993 to 1995, she coordinated a 3 year project supported by UNIFEM/PNUD, entitled: “Experimental School for Women on Environmental Education”. More than 200 peoples (women and men) were trained in 5 workshops through this project, in gender approach to different issues on environment (ex: extractivism, food production, agro toxics, environmental policies). Moema Viezzer has published many articles, books and educational materials around women’s issues and environmental education. Her first one and most famous publication, “Let me Speak”, (original in Spanish: Si me permiten hablar… testimonio de Domitila, una mujer de las minas de Bolivia) has bees translated into 16 languages “Women are not the problem” was a second book of much importance related to the question of gender social relations and is a summary of the MA Dissertation in Social Sciences. She is also the co=organizer of the “Latin American Manual Environmental Education” (with Omar Ovalles and Rachel Trajber), and organizer of different educational booklets on Women and Environment, published by Rede Mulher de Educaчуo: “Com Garra e Qualidade” (with strength and quality, about rural women empowerment – translated into German), “Um outro jeito de ser” (another way of being – gender issues on food production) e “Mulheres em comunicaчуo com o Meio Ambiente” (women in communication with the environment). For the same institution she also co-produced, as a tool for projects dealing with different issues, a manual entitled “Relaчѕes de Gъnero no Ciclo de Projetos” (gender issues in the project cycle), supported by GTZ – the German Technical Cooperation, ABC das Relaчѕes de Gъnero na Responsabilidade Socioambiental, Itaipu Binacional . In 2000 Moema coordinated for Rede Mulher de Educaчуo a project called “Changing the World with Rural Women”, a learning process with women leaders – workers and gatherers, in 3 states of Brazil (Paranс, Tocantins and Minas Gerais), sponsored by Prolead-BID. The project included in the learning process the production of a KIT of education material made of 10 booklets, 01 CD with radio programs, 01 video and 01 Year Calendar. Moema is affiliated or works with different national and international associations and other organizations linked to women issues and environmental education. She received different mentions and prizes directly linked with her work on adult and popular education linked with women’s issues and environmental issues. Nowadays, Moema lives in Toledo, Parana a south brazilian State. She works as advisor on socio-environmental education, women and environmental issues and on gender issues for projects of technical cooperation at different levels (local, national, and international), specially in projects dealing with cultivating good water and public policies for equity. Since 2005 Moema works as consultant for Itaipu Binacional (Curitiba-Foz do Iguaчu/Paranс) on Socio-Environmental Education for the Program “Cultivating Good Water” (70 projects) and for the Programme on Gender Equity of the same institution. She is also part of the technical team for the Center of Socio-environmental knowledges and Cares for the Plata Bassin, a pool of institutions (from governments, academia, midia, ngos) from the five countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Paraguay, Uruguay) included in the Plata Bassiny. She collaborates with the Brazilian Policy Bureau on Environmental Education and is advisor on education for the Earth Charter Internationally.
