After Lisbon, Berlin and Rome, the V European Assembly was held in Saint Petersburg with a marked Eastern European attendance (Armenia, Bosnia, Russia, Slovenia, Estonia, Czechoslovak, Hungary, Rumania, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria), as well as England, Holland, Spain, France, Belgian, Germany, Portugal, Italy and Malta. The main objective was to plan the activities to be carried out in 2009 facing the key date of 2010 (10 years after the Millennium Summit), the elections in the European Parliament and the G-8 meeting in Italy. Eyeballing, the average age of the campaigners that attended the meeting was more or less 27 years old, which implies future and commitment. Taking into account the envisaged time limit, the agenda was rather ambitious; however, interesting discussions took place on the political objectives of the campaign, seeking to engage the interest of and encourage coalitions to make efforts and continue working with energy. The plan comprehends the dates of the World Social Forum, March 8, Parliamentarian elections, the G-8 meeting, activism week approaching October 17, the Human Rights Day. At regional level the emphasis will be put on the Parliamentarian elections. To this end, the actions will be coordinated by Watch-Aid, a project developed by Concord (European NGO platform) that analyzes the development aid in term of its qualitative and quantitative “efficacy” (between quotation marks because although that word is not liked, until now the right term has not been found). In this sense, it was agreed to return to the coalitions, particularly in those member countries of the European Union involved in the process, and look for the best way to act: whether with a strong campaign action in Brussels or whether with simultaneous actions in each country, more markedly in Spain, Germany and Italy. Tribunals, to which the Feminist Task Force contributes to a large extent through its Know-How on guides, are proposed to take place on March 8. Portugal, Italy, Rumania and Malta have expressed their interest in the tribunal or else in the FTF. I was invited to present this year’s FTF actions and lessons learned. A chart was elaborated, enumerating the carried out actions (its text was handed out to all participants), with pictures and testimonies of the New York Tribunal. Our presence was key for the issue of gender to be present as a strategic element to be taken into account en each one of the coalitions. This was reinforced by Lysa John, from India, who was invited to talk about the experience of her coalition; for them the tribunal was of great importance. Glen and a representative of the East were ratified as members of the Founding Council. No volunteers offered to be alternate representatives in this council; however, several proposals were received to become part of the different working groups - even in the new monitoring and learning capitalization group.
