<div>Am back in New York after days in Portugal for the Global Foundation and Global Council meetings. They were very productive meetings and am thrilled to inform that the FTF was well involved in the meetings. I will send highlights separately but for now, I would like to forward information regarding the follow-up to the UN Conference on the Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development which took place this past June. As a follow-up mechanism to that Conference which we FTF are following, the President of the General Assembly(PGA) D'Escoto Brockman has proposed an Ad Hoc Open Ended Working Group to attend to the work and proposals of the Outcome Document of that Conference (not to be repetitive, please see the details in the message below.) The group is meeting today for the first time. At the moment, there is no formal mechanism for civil society/NGO intervention. The Global Social Economy Group / Global Crisis Group is proposing that a letter be sent to President D'Escoto and the upcoming (PGA) to include CSOs/NGOs in the work of the Working Group. I am proposing that the Feminist Task Force be a signatory to the letter and unless I hear otherwise, I will add our name to the list tomorrow (deadline is Thursday COB in NY). </div>

<p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><span style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt">This is by way of an update on important developments at the UN, giving particular attention to those items that relate to the outcome of the June Conference on the Crisis. Recalling paragraph 54 of the June Conference Outcome Document which called on the General Assembly (GA) to establish an Ad Hoc Open Ended Working Group of the GA to follow up issues contained in the Outcome Document, we can report that the process is underway. Notably, on 31 July, the GA agreed to establish the Working Group. The President of the 63<sup>rd</sup> GA, Father D’Escoto, recently appointed (and they have agreed to serve) H.E. Mr. Lazarous Kapambwe, Permanent Representative of Zambia and H.E. Mr. Morten Wetland, Permanent Representative of Norway as co-Chairs of the Ad Hoc Working Group. (see PGA letter attached). The first meeting of the Working Group will take place at the UN on Wednesday 9 September 2009 at 11am in Conference Room 4. We will be following this meeting and reporting on any key developments. </span></font></p>

<p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"><span style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt">Also, you may recall that Martin Tsounkeu had suggested on 11 August that we write a letter directly to the Office of the President of the General Assembly requesting some sort of consultative arrangement to ensure continuing involvement of Civil Society Organizations and NGO’s in the Working Group. Taking up on this very important suggestion, we have prepared a letter to be presented to both the outgoing President of the 63<sup>rd</sup> GA, and the incoming President of the 64<sup>th</sup> GA, (</span></font><font face="TimesNewRoman"><span style="FONT-FAMILY: TimesNewRoman">Mr. Ali Abdussalam Treki – Libya),</span></font> who will take over on Tuesday 15 September 2009. We attach the letter for your review, comment, and sign on. Given the short time available, and the critical importance of this initiative for staying engaged in the follow-up process, we would request that you refrain from suggested modifications or restrict them to the minimum.</p>
