children are put at risk by the effects of globalisation, we are called upon to
act and we are obliged to act. We cannot allow lack of <span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>policies and agreements to encroach upon the
overriding global goal of reducing the number of people living in absolute
poverty by 2015 while improving the livelihoods of the poorest at the same
time. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">1.Gender
inequalities and stereotypes exist in all spheres of the Nigerian polity,
preventing<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>women from developing and
exercising their full human capabilities.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">2. Education</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Female
access to education in Nigeria remains lower than male access as is clearly </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">demonstrated
in the statistics. The Primary school enrolment statistics for 2005, show </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">that 55.9%
of enrolments where boys and only 44.1% were girls. In secondary schools </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">the
breakdown is boys 55.45% and girls 44.55%. At the level of tertiary
institutions only </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">39.70% of
graduates from Universities are female and the percentage of female </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Polytechnic
graduates is lower still at 37.54%. The school dropout rate also remains</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">consistently
higher for females than males. Literacy rate for adult men is 57% while for </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">adult
women, it is 43%. Secondary school completion rate for girls is 44%, while that
of </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">boys is
75%</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">3 Health</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Full
achievement of the global targets for reduction in maternal and child mortality
are </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">hampered
by early marriage, teenage pregnancy, lack of access to formal education, </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">harmful
cultural practices, poverty, illiteracy, and lack of health personnel and </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">infrastructures
particularly in rural areas. With an estimated 54,000 maternal deaths </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">annually,
Nigeria has the 2</span><span style="font-size:8.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;
mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">nd </span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;
font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">highest maternal
mortality rate in the world – with a </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">maternal
mortality rate of approximately 800 maternal deaths per 100,000 births.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Although,
HIV prevalence is reported to have declined steadily from 5.8% in 2001 to 5% </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">in 2003
and 4.4 % in 2005, women still bear the brunt of the epidemic accounting for </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">over 58%
of people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman"><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:

12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Women are
3-4 times more likely to contract HIV than their male counterparts. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">The
Nigerian woman, also, bears the burden of care for people living with HIV/AIDS
in addition to livelihood challenges</span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">amidst
growing feminization of poverty and systemic gender discrimination.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Furthermore,
the stigma attached to the disease makes obtaining services more difficult </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">for women.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">4. Discrimination
and human rights violations</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Socio-cultural,
economic, political, legal and religious impediments to the promotion and</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">protection
of women’s rights still persist in Nigeria. The failure to domesticate CEDAW</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">remains a major
obstacle to the full achievement and enjoyment of rights by enshrined in </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">CEDAW by
Nigerian women. Harmful traditional and cultural practices such as </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">widowhood
rites and disinheritance still persist. National surveys reveal high incidences </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">of gender-based
violence and studies show that women and girls are more likely to be </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">victims of
trafficking than boys and men.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">5. </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Poverty</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Gender
inequalities play a key role in the persistent poverty levels of women in
Nigeria.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Statistics
show that the incidence of poverty using the rate of US $1 per day increased</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">from 28.1
percent in 1980 to </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">65.6 percent in 1996. The incidence increased to 69.2
percent in </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">1997 and today is about 80 percent. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Nigeria fares very poorly in all development indices. </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">Poverty in Nigeria is in the midst of plenty. Although there has been steady </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">economic
growth in the last few years, the benefits have not been evenly distributed </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">amongst
men and women.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:
normal;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman"><br></span></p>

and Climate Change</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:

12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">The extent
of the survival of women and their enjoyment of guaranteed rights are </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">impeded by
environmental and climatic changes. And given the impact of environmental </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">changes on
women especially in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, we have included this </span><span style="font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:TimesNewRoman;mso-bidi-font-family:TimesNewRoman">aspect for consideration and action.</span></p></p><p>There is need for more push on gender policies in Africa especially in Nigeria, because we are still far from Gender justice , we need to still continue with our advocacy and awareness.</p><p><br></p><p>GCAP-FTF has done a lot in the past years, by bringing women into issues of poverty.
<p class="MsoNormal"><br></p><p class="MsoNormal">In Nigeria, On October 18,2007 above 1,800,000 Nigerians
stood up against poverty and 70% were women, as part of a global call. A record 38 million people
worldwide observed the anti-poverty call, eclipsing the 23.5 million figure for
2006. Analysts insist women remain the worst victims of poverty. This is a key Millennium Development
Goal from a local perspective</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The 2007 International Poverty Day provided another
opportunity to examine the state of poverty and the progress made so far made

<li>On MDG 1. I would like to emphasize the relationship between ffd
and MDGs, as related to ODAs and debt elimination. The fact that the
0.7% is not met by the majority of developed countries is not only the
result of financial crisis, it is also the lack of commitment from their
part. Would like to propose that there should be a mechanism (and may
be sanctions) to ensure that ODAs and debt elimination are on the
agenda of the developed countries.
<li>When it comes to climate change MDG 7. Women are the most affected
by climate change, In Africa, droughts and floods are very common now as a
result of climate change. The consequences on farmers (70% of
farmers in Africa are women) and on displacement and immigration and
housing are tremendous. Would recommend taking this into consideration
when planning on adaptation, mitigation, simple technologies, and especially
financing.
<li>Would recommend to refer to the UNDP annual report to quote facts and
figures on women and children mortality rates, HIV/AIDS and Malariah.
<li>Gender justice is still far from reach, we should continue to raise
awareness at all levels</li></ul> <br>In the past five years, a lot
was done by FTF on raising women awareness and policy makers about women
and poverty, this should continue on a larger scale taking into
consideration the current challenges facing women and

ambiente. Además de la reducción del trabajo de los organismos específicos
creados por Naciones Unidas para el seguimiento de problemáticas
particulares como la violencia contra las

Grupo de los 20, el Club de París, etc.</font></font></span></span></p>

movimientos sociales, en su participación en los foros sociales mundiales,
venían prediciendo las crisis desde el 2001. La economía del petróleo y de
las energías fósiles se verificaba destructiva, limitante, excluyente y
guerrera.</font></font></span></span></p>

acumulación, consumo y depredación y violación de los derechos de la mayor
parte de la gente, sobre todo de las
mujeres.</font></font></span></span></p>

inseguridad del sistema planeta, los organismos de decisión no toman en

decisión, dejando estas en manos de quienes defienden los intereses de
transnacionales y mundo financiero.</font></font></span></span></p>

el bienestar de las mayorías y en el sentido de responsabilidad con respecto
