Dear all,

 

The Bangkok meeting of GCAP is about to begin. We all agree that this is a
great opportunity to shape the GCAP agenda and strategies for the September
Summit, the WTO meeting and beyond. MADRE, as a member of both the GCAP and
the Feminist Task Force, considers this an important opportunity to
communicate our concerns. 

 

The women of the Feminist Task Force did a good job organizing ourselves for
the hearings in June and we reached agreement on what we consider priorities
to MAKE POVERTY HISTORY from the perspective of women. This perspective is
neither marginal nor should it be marginalized, and should be reflected in
all the GCAP strategies and in all GCAP policies, guidelines and decisions.
See posted below the Feminist Task Force guidelines which were formally
submitted to the GCAP strategy meeting prior to the Hearings in NY on the
22nd of June (afternoon):

 

FTF Submission to GCAP

 

1.	The necessity of human and women’s rights to be underlying,
cross-cutting issues in the attainment of the MDG’s 
2.	The unacceptable exclusion of violence against women, sexuality and
reproductive health issues from the MDG’s 
3.	The need for implementation of the existing international agreements
as the Beijing Platform for Action, ICPD and Durban Declaration among
others.

 

These three points are not reflected in any official GCAP position paper.

 

We encourage FTF official representatives in Bangkok (Alejandra Scampini and
Betsy Apple), and also all the feminists (men and women) attending the
Bangkok meeting, to defend these guidelines and insist on their inclusion in
the GCAP discourse.

difficult discussions on issues like sexual and reproductive rights, drive
us to forfeit our role.

 

Estimadas amigas,

 

La reunión del GCAP en Bangkok esta a punto de comenzar. Todos estamos de
acuerdo en que esta es una gran oportunidad para dar forma a la agenda  y la
estrategia de GCAP para la Cumbre de Septiembre, para la reunión de la OMC y
para los próximos meses. MADRE, como miembro de GCAP y del Grupo de Trabajo
Feminista de GCAP, considera que también es una importante oportunidad para
comunicar nuestras preocupaciones. Las mujeres del Grupo de Trabajo
Feminista hemos hecho un gran trabajo organizándonos para las Audiencias de
junio y poniéndonos de acuerdo en lo que consideramos prioridades para
ACABAR CON LA POBREZA desde la perspectiva de las mujeres. Esta perspectiva
no es marginal, ni debe ser marginalizada. Además, debería verse reflejada
en todas las estrategias de GCAP y en todas las políticas y decisiones de
GCAP. Aquí copio las propuestas que el Grupo de Trabajo Feminista expuso al
GCAP durante su reunión previa a las Audiencias en la tarde del 22 de Junio:

 

1.	La necesidad de que los derechos humanos y los derechos humanos de
las mujeres sean subrayados como asuntos transversales para la consecución
de los Objetivos del Milenio
2.	La exclusión inaceptable de la violencia contra las mujeres y la
salud sexual y reproductiva de los Objetivos del Milenio
3.	La necesidad de implementar los acuerdos internacionales ya
existentes como la Plataforma de Acción de Beijing, ICPD y la Declaración de
Durban entre otros.

 

Estos tres puntos no han sido reflejados todavía en ningún documento oficial
de GCAP.

Desde aquí alentamos a las representantes oficiales del Grupo de Trabajo
Feminista (Alejandra Scampini y Betsy Apple) y a todas las feministas
(hombres y mujeres) que estarán en la reunión de Bangkok a defender estas
propuestas y a insistir en su inclusión en el discurso de GCAP

Ps. No deberíamos aceptar que el miedo a abrir una discusión supuestamente
controvertida sobre temas como los derechos sexuales y reproductivos no
lleve a abandonar nuestro papel.
