Dear friends,
queridas amigas,
I share with you a message sent by one of our GCAP Kenyan colleagues
informing of an action organised in support of peace in Kenya yesterday.

Saludos,
Ana

 Dear Collegue,
>
> Yesterday, Members GCAP- Kenya and and Save the Elephant- a Kenyan
> Charity, led women in building a flower monument at Freedom Corner.
> Women of diverse ethnic backgrounds launched the monument and made
> a statement saying "NO MORE DEATHS" . Touched by the move, 20 MPs
> from PNU reacted to media reports and today they placed flowers at
> the monument. In their statement they echoed the appeal made by the
> women and expressed support for the Annan initiative and called on
> the top leaders to put the country first and get above party
> politics. The MPs took exception with a threat for an imposition of
> an external solution should Kenya fail tocome up with one. The
> remark was attributed to a US African Diplomat Dr Jendayi Frazer.
>
> With guns on one side and a flower in the other, the police joined
> in the campaign making a resounding visual statement. Since Jan
> 31st the police have fired tear gas at anybody who tried to access
> the park. This is the first time members of public are accessing
> any area of this public park since then. Peace is coming,
> democratic space is opening up again. Below are some photos from
> todays event.

> Freedom corner is a part of Uhuru Park that has been sealed of
> since violence erapted a month ago. Two decades ago, the section
> was named freedom corner after a protest led by the Nobel Peace
> laureate Prof Wangare Mathai involving mothers of political
> prisoners in a fasting sit-in at the corner. After some days, the
> police violently broke up the demonstration and the women stripped
> naked in protest.
