Queridas colegas:

Rosa

  Subject: MDG Review Summit information

  Dear colleagues,

Pursuant to Ana's message with GCAP bulletin and Stand Up global events on September 17-19, I am sending information about local organizing in New York and how some women's organizations might link in to events on the ground.

As mentioned in a prior message, organizations mobilizing for the UN Summit in NY are having regular teleconference calls and communicating via an MDG list serve. I am including brief notes of Thursday's meeting and other relevant information with some deadline info below.

The FTF international Facilitation Team members will be coming to New York. We will have a team of 10+ for the week of activities, advocacy, mobilizing and strategizing.
A brief calendar of pertinent events is listed below with some details:
-- FTF will staff MDG booths at the Lincoln Center Stand Up "Make Some Noise" event, Sun. Sept 19th-- see www.standupnyc.org for more details (also, see message below about booths at Lincoln Center event)
-- FTF event - Sept 20th. The FTF will be having a Partnership event on Monday, Sept. 20th - Two years after the Financial Crisis: How are women faring? More details to follow.
  -- NGO/CSO Coordination space - Sept. 20th - Salvation Army on 51st / 2nd
-- FTF partners will participate in the International Day of Peace event organized by the UN Church Center Chaplain and United Methodist Women's Division.
-- FTF Facilitation Team strategy session, Tues. Sept 21
-- Civil Society Forum on Beyond 2015, Wednesday, Sept. 22, Salvation Army
-- GCAP will be having their Global Assembly (takes place every 3 yrs) Sept 23-25. FTF will have representatives from every region.

There is also the official Partnership events listed at the Summit website: http://www.un.org/en/mdg/summit2010/events.shtml
Please share any events you are planning for the week via the list serve and stay tuned for more information.

** Below is information on the booths at the Lincoln Center Stand Up event. Mike Meldonian of Oxfam America is the subcommittee chair for the booths and he's now sent around an application for booth space. There are planning 8 MDG booths (1 for each of the MDGs) and 12 organizational booths (first come, first serve). Organizations can staff one or more of the MDG booths, or apply for their own booth for $200.

** The link to the Stand Up Lincoln Center event on Sept. 19th is: www.standupnyc.org

** The link to the Stand Up web site is: www.standupagainstpoverty.org I am including the notes of yesterday's conference call below and this has other information regarding the NGO mobilizations and events corresponding to the UN Summit.

      d.. Ines, IWWF
      e.. Leo,Tim, Bond/GCAP UK
      f.. Jeff, CIVICUS
g.. Rosa, Marta, FTF – GCAP

      j.. Melinda, Jubilee USA
      k.. Fionuala/Nehmi/Rajiv, GCAP
    UN Advocacy

Amnesty provided an overview of outcome document discussions to date.

    Main points

      a.. - Ongoing disagreement b/w EU and G77
b.. - EU want a strong but undetailed political document, do not want specific details on each mdgs, are unhappy with the current mdg by mdg structure, DO NOT WANT ANY SPECIFIC COMMITMENTS in the doc
      c.. - MDG3 biggest priority for EU
d.. - EU support human rights approach
e.. - Human rights and accountability being pushed by Switzerland, Norway and Lichtenstein in particular
f.. - USA participating in discussion but not bringing significant proposals or ideas to the table
g.. - Canada also supports HRs and accountability but also supports no details on commitments being included in the document
h.. - G77 (chaired by Yemen) want a detailed document with specific proposals
i.. - want a focus on the scaling up of aid and accountability of donors
j.. - Most do not want reference to human rights (see this as interfering with internal politics)

Rumour that changes to current outcome document are being made a new draft will be discussed in 1st week of September when member states return.

Jeff/Rosa to gather more info on whether this is correct info.

Decision: Keep focus on lobbying Government at capital level over next few weeks and to decide on next call if it is worth putting together a common lobby paper on key issues on the outcome document and do a round of final lobbying of member states 1st week of SEP.

Suggestion of meeting with Co-Chairs Denmark and Senegal around this time. Fionuala to get more info on this from the PGA CSO task force
