Dear friends,
queridas amigas,
please see below the message sent by Lysa in relation to the nominations for a speaking role at the UN MDG hearings. There are also suggestions on how to take part in the review process at national level. If you have any comments, please write to the list. Of course we hope to have an important representation at the hearings.
Greetings,
Ana
Amigas,
Saludos,
Ana

Subject: [GCAP Globalcouncil] URGENT: Nomination Form for a Speaking Role atthe UN MDG Hearings
[Please circulate to all GCAP regional and taskforce list-serves]
Dear Global Council members,
Please find enclosed the online application form to nominate speakers to the UN MDG hearings - the deadline for submission of which is April 16th; please use the attachment to enable other networks - particularly representing communities and countries that are directly relevant to the MDG agenda - to consider participating in the June hearings.
In addition to this there are few key actions that we would like to urge all GCAP coalitions / constituencies based on to plan towards to enable a strong input to the Outcomes of the MDG 2010 Review:
a) Engagement with the Country reports (April-June): UNDP country offices are currently working with the government misssions and ministries to put together the national country reports; Please get in touch to ensure that civil society inputs are included in both process and content of the report; and also begin planning towards public / media events to respond to the report - which is also likely to be released in June / June in many countries
b) Development of MDG 2015 Charters (April-June): Please explore immeidately the possibility of bringing civil society networks together to develop 'The World We Want' country and thematic charters that outlines the key deliverables (policy, program, budgetary) that we want from governments to enable the fulfilment of the MDGs. This could also be taken forward as a strong input into the Online consultation on the MDG Review (being held across April); the UN MDG hearings (June); the Outcomes Document of the MDG Review (upto Jul/Aug) and the Round Table Meetings (Sep).
c) Parliamentary Debates on the MDG Breakthrough Plan (May-Sep): In several countries that have strong access to the government, GCAP partners have suggested the possibility of organizing parliamentary debates to enable a commitment to an 'MDG Breakthrough Plan' that outlines commitments that the government would make in the period 2011-15 towards meeting and exceeding the MDG agenda (the country reports and charters would also serve as base material for this action). We hope as GCAP to be able to organize these debates in atleast 10 countries; and look forward to your active engagement in enabling the same. Actions on this line are also being proposed in regional meetings of the AU, EU and SAARC.
d) Country Delegations and Co-Events at the Review: Given the strong work of GCAP on the MDGs over the past five years, we do feel that we have a strong opportunity to ensure civil society representation in the official government delegations to the MDG Reivew; and also enable partnership events with national govenrments and regional forums at the MDG Summit. We request you to immediately explore this possibility, based on the access that you may have to the offices of government in your country.
Please get in touch with us if you need any further details and share any developments on the above actions with Fionuala Cregan <fionuala.gcap en gmail.com> so that we may coordinate our actions globally; and also share them with the broader networks who are part of THE WORLD WE WANT campaign on the MDG 2010 Review (see www.theworldwewant.info) for more details.
Best regards,
Lysa John

NOW ONLINE: Nomination Form for a Speaking Role at the Informal Interactive Hearings of the General Assembly with Non-governmental organizations, Civil society organizations and the Private sector, United Nations, New York, 14-15 June 2010.2010 will be a critical year in determining which development pathways our world will pursue. In 2000, UN Member States agreed to the Millennium Declaration and committed themselves to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
On 20-22 September 2010, the General Assembly will hold a High-level Plenary Meeting, also referred to as the ‘MDG Summit’, in New York. The Summit’s main focus will be to build on what we have learned during the past 10 years since the adoption of the Millennium Declaration and how to accelerate progress towards the internationally agreed development goals, in particular MDGs. The Summit will take stock of the successes, best practices, lessons learned, obstacles and gaps related to the MDGs and other development goals.
As a part of the process leading to the summit, the General Assembly will also convene ‘Hearings’ with representatives of civil society and the private sector from 14-15 June. The outcomes of these hearings will provide an input to the preparatory process for the Summit and be issued as an Assembly document.
A nomination process for speakers at the hearings has now been opened so that interested individuals can apply to actively participate at the event.
The application deadline is 16 April 2009.
The online form can be found at: http://esango.un.org/irene/index.html?page=viewContent&nr=1&type=22§ion=15
