* Applications invited for the 2011 GFMD Civil Society Days - Deadline: 13
September*

Geneva 17 August – The application process for participation by civil
society representatives in the Civil Society Days (CSD) of this year’s
Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) opened today, along with
the unveiling of a new GFMD civil society website providing broad
information about the Global Forum.

The online application form and process are now accessible at
www.gfmdcivilsociety.org. The deadline for application is *13 September
2011. *

Application for CSD participation is open to various sectors of civil
society, including human rights, development, labour, diaspora and migrant
organizations, academia and the private sector. The CSD will offer space to
150 - 200 Delegates. If more people apply as in prior years, not everyone
will be selected. In that case selection will take into account sectoral,
geographic, and gender diversity, and relevant experience and knowledge on
migration and development issues. Applicants will be notified by the end of
September whether they are selected to participate.

*GFMD Civil Society Days 2011*

This year’s GFMD will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, with the civil society
meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday November 29th and 30th, the government
meeting Thursday and Friday December 1st and 2nd, and a formal common space
bringing civil society and states together the morning of December 1st.

“The GFMD is the world’s premier opportunity for leaders of government and
civil society to discuss important matters of international migration and
its many links with development,” explains John Bingham, Head of Policy for
the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC). ICMC was appointed
by the Swiss Government Chair of the 2011 GFMD as coordinator of GFMD civil
society activities this year. “In each of the four annual Global Forum
meetings to date: in Belgium, the Philippines, Greece and Mexico,
participants from non-government organizations, trade unions and labour
organizations, diaspora and migrant associations, academia and the private
sector from every region in the world have gathered to share perspectives,
examine policies and practices, build solutions and recommendations, and
forge partnerships of action among themselves as well as with migration
officials from as many as 155 countries.”

Acting upon the opportunity granted by the Swiss Chair to exercise greater
autonomy over format and themes of the CSD, and picking up naturally with
reference and relevance to the government programme, this year’s Civil
Society Program will focus on *Labour Migration, Development and the
Protection of Migrants and their Families in the context of Work. *

Under this overarching theme, the subthemes and roundtables of the CSD will
provisionally include:

   - Institutional and legal frameworks for the protection of migrant
workers and their families, including families separated by migration and of
   children left-behind;
   - Remedies to and the protection of migrants in irregular work
   circumstances
   - Addressing labour market and workers’ needs and demands and the
positives and pitfalls of temporary and circular migration in that regard
   - (Co-)development for decent work at home, reducing the necessity to
migrate and in this context focusing on the specific role of migrants and
diaspora in contributing to development in their new countries as well as in
   their countries of origin.
