South, young (under 30), indigenous Miskito with considerable experience in
both northern and southern organizations. Ms. Aleman is from a GCAP member
organization and, in her capacity as MADRE Program Director and Coordinator of
FIMI, has important experience coordinating NGO efforts at the UN. She is a

MADRE’s Program Director and International Indigenous Women Coordinator
(FIMI), is a 29-year-old Indigenous Miskita woman from <st1:country-region
w:st="on">Nicaragua</st1:country-region>’s <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">North</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Atlantic</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Coast</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. Educated at the <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Mobile</st1:PlaceName>’s
Latin American campus and the Nicaraguan Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">School</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Diplomacy</st1:PlaceName>
in <st1:City w:st="on">Managua</st1:City>, Ms. Alemán has continued her
education at Human Rights University in <st1:City w:st="on">Geneva</st1:City>,
the Center for Women’s Global Leadership at <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Rutgers</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> in <st1:State w:st="on">New
Jersey</st1:State>, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Columbia</st1:PlaceName>

programs with partner organizations in Latin America, the Caribbean, and <st1:place
w:st="on">Africa</st1:place>, and is responsible for overall program
development with partners worldwide. She also coordinates human rights,
HIV/AIDS, and leadership trainings for women and youth in countries such as <st1:country-region
w:st="on">Rwanda</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Kenya</st1:country-region>,
<st1:country-region w:st="on">Nicaragua</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region
w:st="on">Guatemala</st1:country-region> and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region
w:st="on">Mexico</st1:country-region></st1:place>, and leads educational
delegations to the countries where she works.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Ms. Alemán represents <st1:PersonName
w:st="on">MADRE</st1:PersonName> and FIMI in the international arena and
coordinates <st1:PersonName w:st="on">MADRE</st1:PersonName>’s work in
United Nations conferences. Ms. Alemán played a key role in the Youth Caucus
at the UN World Conference against Racism in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region
w:st="on">South Africa</st1:country-region></st1:place> in 2001. As FIMI coordinator,
she facilitated the participation of Indigenous women from around the world in
the UN Commission on the Status of Women Beijing+10 Review Process in New York
in February and March 2005. And for the annual sessions of the Permanent Forum
on Indigenous Issues she plays a role in guaranteeing the participation of indigenous
women leaders from all over the world. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

Alemán served as Assistant to the Director of the Faculty of International
Relations and Humanities at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType>
of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Mobile</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>’s Latin
American campus from 1996-1999. She also coordinated logistics for the
Rigoberta Menchu Túm Foundation’s Mesoamerican Conference for Indigenous
Authorities and Leaders in 1998. Additionally, Ms. Alemán has acted as a
liaison between Indigenous organizations on the North Atlantic Coast of
Nicaragua and the communities they serve.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
