Such inequality between men and women breeds violence against women and girls, and through this parallel epidemic of violence, HIV/AIDS continues to spread. Acknowledging this link between HIV/AIDS and gender inequity, the IAWC was started to address the lack of such a connection at the International AIDS Conferences in 1992 by an international group of women from both developing and industrialized countries at the VIII International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam. The IAWC was started because girls and women’s issues were not being addressed at International AIDS Conferences. Mission: The IAWC is an international network of organizations and women affected and infected by HIV/AIDS that advocates at the international and regional level about the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic on women and girls. IAWC works to fight against gender inequalities, which have fueled the pandemic. Vision: Achieving gender equity and full enjoyment of women’s rights is imperative to controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic and must be reached with the full participation of affected and infected women. The IAWC works towards this vision by bringing the connection between HIV/AIDS and gender inequality to the international agenda though its presence at international conferences, participation of members in conference tracks and committees, and the organization of satellite events. The IAWC also has representation on international groups like the Global Steering Committee of the World AIDS Campaign and the UNAIDS Reference Group on Human Rights, additional spaces through which the IAWC promotes the full respect of women’s human rights as well as the connection between gender and HIV/AIDS. The IAWC holds the position that it is essential to speak out against gender inequalities, advocate for women’s rights, and help lead a global response to the pandemic by facilitating public policy and a clear response that connects HIV/AIDS and the unequal position of women in the world. The IAWC recognizes that the United Nations, the International AIDS Conferences and other regional conferences and meetings offer an important platform and venue for addressing women’s issues around HIV/AIDS, in research, treatment and care, within the context of gender and human rights.
