declaración con relación a la elección de Obama que, entre otras cosas, dice que
se ha comprometido a incorporar los ODM como política. Me hizo recordar a
nuestras colegas de Nueva York y sus testimonios en los Tribunales contra la
Pobreza, cuando decían que los ODM no se aplican a los Estados Unidos, y
que la CEDAW no ha sido ratificada por los Estados Unidos, y nuestros colegas,
en la reunión del equipo de facilitación, decían que teníamos que movilizarnos
para apoyar a nuestras hermanas estadounidenses para que se ratificara la
Convención. Hay muchos temas que seguiremos con expectativa en esta nueva
presidencia: la reforma de la ONU, el Consejo de los Derechos Humanos al que
Estados Unidos decidió no unirse, el Protocolo de Kyoto, que Estados Unidos
tampoco firmó, el veto de financiación que Estados Unidos ha impuesto a
organizaciones que apoyan el aborto, también a organizaciones que promueven el
uso de preservativos para prevenir el VIH/SIDA. Todos estos temas son
cercanos a nuestro trabajo, están relacionados con nuestra lucha por la
justicia de género y la erradicación de la pobreza. De manera que también
estamos esperanzadas y nos alegramos mucho contigo por la ventana de
posibilidades que los resultados de estas elecciones han abierto para los
Estados Unidos y para el mundo entero. Y celebramos la diversidad en los Estados

<DIV>The buzz all day has been about the incredible and historic election of
Barack Obama as our next president here in the USA. On the radio, in the
papers, with neighbors and family, people are expressing their disbelief,
their unbridled excitement about this transformational election. For people of
color, particularly African Americans, Obama's victory is as one put it, an
act of divinity. New Yorkers were elated and rejoicing in spontaneous
celebrations in the streets, thrilled to be transforming our country
through the act of electing a Black person to the highest office in the
land. His election ushers in not only an era of hope and change,
but one of healing, understanding and tolerance about our differences as well
as our sameness. It brings us closer to dealing with racism and
xenophobia in our country and the world. It's an astonishing occurrence,
difficult to capture in one message. Some of you have attempted to capture the
significance of the moment as well, and thank you for the messages of
congratulations but I think the congratulations are for all of us. In an
interdependent world, the message of hope and change will resonate around the
globe. The ripples of this big splash will spread across oceans reaching all
corners of the world. We can all rejoice in the goodness of this
election.</DIV>
