<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif"><strong>Letter from the
Global Secretariat</strong></font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">There are just a few says
left until the major civil society action prior to the G20 in London.
>From Saturday March 28<sup>th</sup> to April 2<sup>nd</sup> </font><font
face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">we hope that G20 cities will see
the full force of the people and their wishes for a people-centred
financial system articulated through mass rallies. GCAP will be
present with placards and banners everywhere possible, especially with
the group in London so that the voices of several coalitions and
constituency groups will speak on our behalf, more details below.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">The FTF’s <strong><em>20
Days to the G20</em></strong> action has been really well received and
continues to the 28<sup>th</sup>. Anyone who hasn’t been getting the
daily e updates can download them on whiteband.org. Also keep across
the build up to the UN Special Summit in May and the G8 when the same
themes will reverberate around the world and GCAP’s voice, especially
from the South, will need to be heard again.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">Our global secretariat
team is under transition too now with the arrival of a new member of
staff this week in Irene Muchemi Ndiritu as the Press Officer covering
Ciara’s maternity leave. Irene is Kenyan and comes to us directly from
Action Aid’s Johannesburg Press office where she has been working for
18 months. We are delighted to welcome her to the GCAP family. She
and Ciara will do a handover during the coming weeks before Ciara
departs for 5 months. Details of the other vacancies we now need to

<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">Less than one week away
from the G20 rally in London, campaigners are already addressing the
global leaders who will attend this summit. This event is expected play
a key role in shaping the future of the global economic system, so it
is crucial to ensure that our voices are heard.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">GCAP’s G20 Working Group
has been convening regularly to coordinate information and actions. As
well as the existing toolkit, some GCAP members will march together in
London on March 28<sup>th</sup> joining others in Germany and Spain.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">Blogging will be big
around this summit. As well as a team blogging for <a
href="http://www.whiteband.org/blog?utm_source=eletter090325">www.whiteband.org/blog</a>,
there will be a telecall on Wednesday March 25<sup>th</sup> to
coordinate the London team and arrange a meeting point for the rally as
well as any other actions.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">As GCAP Co-chair Kumi
Naidoo, commented on his last contribution to the Huffington Post Blog,
“we are at a critical turning point and may be witnessing a shift in
the way citizens view the world and distribution of wealth.
Opportunities for root and branch reform lay before us, but rumours of
squabbles behind the political scenes threaten the degree of this
shift--politics is once again hampering progress”.</font></p>

ACTION CONTINUES<br>
</strong>The Feminist taskforce has been issuing daily e-alerts linking
gender to the agenda of the upcoming G20. </font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">The “<a
title="International Women's Day 2009 - March 8th"
class="internal-link"

Days to G20</a>” e-campaign will culminate on March 28, the beginning
of the Global Week of Action on the G20 (March 28 – April 4), and will
feed into the global mobilizations planned around the G20 meeting on
April 2, 2009. The emails have been sent out in both Spanish and

</strong>Rosa G. Lizarde, of GCAP's Feminist Taskforce, told IPS News
Agency last week that that the alliance is calling for women to be
central to crafting solutions to the financial crisis. Read the

<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif"><em>“One of the reasons
why we launched this "20 Days to G20" campaign was to make those links
between the feminisation of poverty and the financial, food, energy,
and the climate change crisis. And to have women included in the
dialogue and the decision-making of the economic and financial summits
- not just the G20 meeting, but also at the upcoming conference on the
economic and financial impacts on development”</em> said Lizarde.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif"><strong>UN COMISSION ON
THE FINANCIAL CRISIS<br>
</strong>The Third World Network is calling on the global civil society
to participate in the 25-27 March and early-June UN Summit in New York.
Around these two dates there will be two major summits: the UN General
Assembly President's Expert Commission led by Joseph Stiglitz, will
have its third meeting and also, there will be a Special Session of the
General Assembly, aimed at the participation of heads of states and
governments.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">Unlike the G20, the UN
approach to the financial crisis is expected to take a comprehensive
view on how this crisis is affecting developing countries and
hopefully, these meetings will allow for the participation of civil
society. It is crucial now to make an effort to let the poor’s people
voice heard, as this UN General Assembly summit in June may be reduced
in its scoop to confine it to FFD and MDGs rather than the systemic
issues or a reform of the global systems..</font></p>

APRIL G8 ENVIRONMENT MINISTERS MEETING – INVITATION</strong></font></u></h3>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">The G8 Environment
Ministers will be meeting in Syracuse between April 22<sup>nd</sup> and
24<sup>th</sup> with the participation of some new members: Denmark and
Major Emitting Countries (MEM). To focus and promote solutions to the
environmental needs of developing countries, the Italian Coalition
Against Poverty and GCAP have been invited to participate in an NGO
outreach session dedicated to climate change and biodiversity, which
will take place on April 22<sup>nd</sup>.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">The Italian coalition is
touch with the relevant offices to work out the details of the
outreach. It is important to make the most out of this opportunity and

- LIVE ONLINE CHAT ON MATERNAL HEALTH</strong></font></u></h3>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">On March 25 at 10:00 am
Eastern Standard Time/ 14.00 GMT, Womens' eNews' Kimberly Seals Allers
will moderate a live chat with Annie Raja, General Secretary of the
National Federation of Indian Women, and Dr. Jemima A. Dennis-Antwi,
the International Confederation of Midwives' Regional Midwifery Adviser
for Anglophone Africa.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">Every year, 500,000 women
die while trying to give life and the vast majority of these deaths are
preventable. As part of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), 189
world leaders have pledged to reduce maternal mortality by
three-quarters by 2015. But maternal health has seen the least progress
of all of the MDGs, and the Goal is unlikely to be achieved unless
urgent action is taken now.</font></p>

emergency, the UN Millennium Campaign partnered with Women's eNews, the

<h3><u><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif"><strong>G20 FINANCE
MINISTERS MEETING</strong></font></u></h3>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">Prior to the main summit
on April 2, the G20 Finance Ministers' gathered in London on Saturday
March 14<sup>th</sup> to advance the agenda. GCAP Co-chairs issued an
open letter to coalitions, government and media ahead of the meeting
outlining our demands for poverty eradication measures and the needs of
the poorest people to be prioritised. GCAP is calling for a funding
commitment for development countries and also a transparent process for
reforming the financial system. The letter can be found at: <br>

sustained effort to beat the recession but lacked any concrete detail
or sign that much would change in the existing financial system. To

<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">The April 2nd agenda now
looks set to focus on three broad areas: sorting out the crisis through
fiscal and monetary means and encouraging banks to lend; medium-term
regulatory reforms; and strengthening multilateral bodies such as the
IMF so that they can give more help to crisis-hit developing countries.</font></p>

INDIA PEOPLE’S MANIFESTO, DEMANDS FOR WOMEN</strong></font></u></h3>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">The ‘All India People’s
Manifesto’ initiative is bringing together local groups across 365
parliamentary constituencies to discuss and develop a 10-point
development agenda for each constituency. This effort aims to engage
people with the national elections not only to cast their vote but also
shape the future that they want for themselves and for the country.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">The Women’s Manifesto has
been compiled through the demands that have emerged from the first
phase of the All India People’s Manifesto and the first three key
demands are: Education for Girls enforced by law, enactment of the
Women’s Reservation Bill and the stronger implementation of the
Domestic Violence Act. Equally significant are the measures proposed to
strengthen the economic role and participation of women which reflect a
strong claim for their rightful share of the nation’s resources.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">Some local celebrities
like the actress and director Nandita Das, support this campaign and
help it reach an outstanding number of people. "The first step for the
youth to take is to start voting. People, irrespective of their
background and places need to start talking about issues and working
towards that change that they see. Otherwise one will just miss that
opportunity” she said.</font></p>

<h3><u><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">AFRICA - GCAP BURKINA
FASO REACHES OUT DURING FESPACO (PAN AFRICA FILM AND TV FESTIVAL)</font></u></h3>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">FESPACO, the Pan African
Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou, is the largest film
festival and cultural event on the continent. GCAP recognizes the
enormous reach and impact of films in raising awareness on key social
issues and having this in mind <strong>GCAP Burkina Faso</strong> took
this 40th anniversary of Fespaco (28<sup>th</sup> February to 7<sup>th</sup>
March 2009) as an opportunity to reach out to film industry
professionals, the public and the media and encourage them to engage
socially and politically.</font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">GCAP participation aimed
to inform film professionals and the public on GCAP policy demands;
engage film makers to produce movies that would help Africans to free
themselves and be full citizens; outreach film makers and encourage
them to support GCAP as Good Will Ambassadors campaigning for poverty
eradication and finally, reward the most “socially relevant” movie
dealing GCAP policy issues.</font></p>

learning exercise has been completed, and we would now like to share

attention to the executive summary, recommendations, and helpful
evaluative tools in the appendix. It is a critical and comprehensive
document raising key issues about GCAP's function, so we hope you will
give it your attention, and send your comments through to the global
secretariat. </font></p>
<p><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif">We are currently working
on implementing some of the key recommendations from the evaluation.
To do so, the Learning and Accountability Group is going to be
facilitating discussions around the five following streams:</font></p>
