class=title>Special Editorial from the GCAP Feminist
Taskforce

Dear Friends & Partners of GCAP,

This year, the United Nations (UN) 54th
Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) had a very
special focus, which was to look back at what has been
achieved in the last 15 years since the Fourth Women
World Conference in Beijing in 1995, where the Beijing
Declaration and Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) were
adopted. The emphasis was placed on the sharing of
experiences and good practices, with a view towards
overcoming remaining obstacles and new challenges,
including those related to the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs). In the official, as well as parallel,
events several voices were heard about the various areas
in which little has been done and the reasons for it. At
the same time, the work done by women’s organisations
around the world and the constant presence of this work
throughout the UN was highlighted.

Special recognition was given to the proposed new
gender equality entity at the UN which will provide
better coordination, higher political leverage and
visibility, and funding for implementation for women.
This is very much due to the vigilance, the push and
determination of the Gender Equality Architecture Reform
(GEAR) Campaign, of which the GCAP-Feminist Task Force
(FTF) is a member, and of the support of allies in
Member States, the Deputy Secretary General and the
Secretary General of the UN.

This edition of the CSW showed us again that there is
much that still needs to be achieved in spite of
significant gains. The current FTF International Women’s
Day e-campaign, “12 Days on the 12 Critical Areas of
Concern of BPfA”, informs on advances and what is still
pending in each and every one of these areas, from
poverty, education, health, and the girl child, to the
economy, institutional arrangements and much more. The
daily alerts and the CSW debates point out that
discrimination is sometimes subtle, and hidden behind
the statistics: so much so that gender discrimination
starts before birth, denying women even the right to
exist in this world. If there is one thing to take away
from this year’s review, it is the extent of this
discrimination. The alarm comes from all corners of the
globe, from various experts and sources: the world is
experiencing a “gendercide,” and gender
apartheid is rampant. The moral imperative of our
generation - of the 21st century - is the
call for women’s equality.

If we look at the numbers of women out of the
education system, of those still dying while giving
birth, of the growing number of girls taking full
responsibility of their siblings as a result of HIV/AIDS
deaths, of the scandalous number of women dying of
domestic violence every year, of the women who have
become climate change refugees around the world - just
to name but a few of the areas in which women carry the
burden of extra responsibility for the care economy and
all its consequences - we can only conclude that there
is no advance possible in achieving the MDGs, in
counteracting climate change and its negative
consequences, in being genuine about the possibility of
eradicating poverty, unless we seriously address the
inequalities that result from the lack of gender
justice.

This is the key message to take from the CSW and the
one that GCAP as a whole has to carry throughout this
year in the preparation for the MDG Review and towards
the COP 16 at the end of the year. Gender equality is
central for building a sustainable and equitable world.
Men and women have a shared responsibility in the
construction of this vision, in dreaming it and putting
into place The World We Want!

It is our moral imperative to speak up against
“gendercide”, against gender apartheid and for women’s
equality and empowerment. We call on all our GCAP
partners to join us, loud and clear, in sounding the
alarm for women and speaking up about The World We
Want.

The World We Want is one in which
every one of you speaks up against gender-based
violence! The World We Want is one in
which every one of you picks ups the flag for gender
equality! The World We Want is one in
which we achieve Gender Equality to End Poverty!

In solidarity,

Ana Agostino, GCAP FTF Global Coordinator, and

Representative, North America

At the CSW, the GCAP Feminist Taskforce (FTF) had a
strong and diverse team on the ground attending
meetings, advocating, and organizing our event
presenting the “first-hand accounts of the Women’s
Tribunals on Poverty and Climate Justice.” FTF
colleagues who organised tribunals around the world
reported on their experiences and outcomes.
Presentations were made from three regions of the global
South, Asia, Africa and Latin America, included those
from Nigeria, Uganda, Nepal, Pakistan and Brazil.

Women left inspired to generate a space where women’s
voices take central stage. Indeed, this is the spirit of
a gathering such as the CSW: thousands of women
from all walks of life gather to take stock of what has
been achieved and what the shortcomings are in our
struggle to fight discrimination, and to work for a
world where all human beings, with all their diversity,
are granted the full exercise of their rights.

organized by GCAP Pakistan on 9th
March

A historic long march for land rights was organized
by Anjuman-eMazarin Punjab (Alliance of Tenant of
Punjab), Awaz Foundation, the GCAP Pakistan National
Secretariat and other affiliated networks on
9th March. The march involved more than
30,000 peasants and tenant farmers whose livelihoods
were under threat by a government move to allocate
public lands for corporate farming. More than one
million tenants were expected to be displaced by the
proposed policy of the government.

Protesters - including women and youth in large
numbers - tied red ribbons on their heads, wrists and
arms and took to the streets shouting the slogan “Malki
YA Maut” (Ownership OR Death) as part of this collective
resistance. This action bore immediate results in the
form of written concession by the government conceded to
three key demands of the decade-long struggle for
peasant land rights in the Punjab province: the
acceptance of the rights of land ownership to tenants
and the land in their possession shall not be
transferred to any other multinational company or
agricultural graduates; complete assessment process of
state owned lands within ten days, and the process of
land ownership transfer to tenants to start with
immediate effect; formation of a monitoring committee
for the process of land transfer to tenants,
particularly women peasant workers including members of
representative civil society networks.

GCAP activists around the world celebrated the
release of our Malawi members, Edward Chileka, Howard
Jimu and Awonenji Chimera on 12th March,
ending more than two weeks of arbitrary detention on
account of a statement made by the organization
questioning the political priorities reflected in the
National Youth Development Fund.

“We were detained for 16 days in Lilongwe Police and
Maula Prison Cells until 12th March when we
were released on bail with conditions of bail bond,
sureties and that we report to the police every
Wednesday pending trial..... We feel we are not yet free
and that this government action has the potential of
muting and suppressing other voices of human rights
activists. This is indeed a form of intimidation and
suppression,” says Edward in a personal letter sent to
GCAP and other networks engaged in mobilizing worldwide
support against the arrest in this period.
