<div>Late last week we learned of the brutal murder of David Kato, a Ugandan gay activist who was bludgeoned to death with a hammer in his home in the Mukono district outside of Kampala. David Kato, we have learned, knew he was a marked man. His photo was on the cover of a national newspaper with the words, "Hang them." He had been receiving numerous threats to his life. In a speech last year at Jesus College, Cambridge University called, "A matter of life and death: the struggle for Ugandan gay rights," he spoke of the difficulty of living his truth saying "-- it's not easy---so much homophobia,..." and of how some gays and lesbians ran back into "the closet" or left their home in Uganda and ran to Kenya. And he spoke eerily of knowing, "some of us must die---- some of us I know are going to die."

<div>This incident has touched many of us and we mourn his loss and condemn the entrenched homophobia and the societal, political and religious structures that enabled this tragedy to occur. Many of us can connect with David's activism as a human rights defender and his work for a just and better world. As he said in the Jesus College speech in talking about the friends and relatives of gays, lesbians and transgendered peoples, "... we must make them realize the values in us,..." In doing just this, we have joined with partners in New York, the Office of the Chaplain of the Church Center at the UN, the Africa Office of the Episcopal Church, Loretto Community, Axial 20/20 and others, to honor the life of David Kato and make known his values, his life and sacrifice in a service called,

<div><font size="3" face="Times New Roman, Times, serif">Last December gay activist, Frank Mugisha, Executive Director of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) spoke out last December at an FTF and partner-organized Tribunal on Social Exclusion in New York. He spoke out against the entrenched homophobia and a culture of hate encountered by gays, lesbians and transgendered persons in his home country of Uganda.<span> </span>On the BBC, Mugisha said that Kato had recently been concerned about the threats he had received.<span> </span>"He was killed by someone who came in his house with a hammer, meaning anyone else could be the next target."<span> <br>

<div><font size="3" face="Times New Roman, Times, serif">We condemn the killing of David Kato, who just by being himself and living out the truth of his life risked losing it.<span> </span>We condemn the homophobic acts and acts of hatred and social exclusion based on religious justification.<span> </span>We call on the Ugandan Parliament and president to kill the Anti-Gay Bill currently being considered for the next election in February.<span> <br>

<div><font size="3" face="Times New Roman, Times, serif">On a separate yet related issue featuring another persecuted human rights defender, GCAP went online today with the Journal of Hope, a collection of statements in solidarity with Indian human rights activist, Dr. Binaya Sen, who has been imprisoned for what seems to be doing his job --- providing health care services to indigenous and disenfranchised communities in his country.<span> </span>His wife, Ilina Sen, has been herself harassed for calling attention to her husband's imprisonment.</font><span><font size="3" face="Times New Roman, Times, serif"> </font><br>

We join the international community and 22 Noble laureates who sent an appeal to the Government of India for his release.<span> </span></span></div>

Not only should Dr. Sen be released immediately from imprisonment and charges withdrawn, there should also be a thorough inquiry against all those who have framed Dr. Sen so maliciously. We also demand adequate compensation to Dr. Sen and for being deprived of his basic freedoms and to his wife, Ilina, and family for being subjected to the most inhumane mental torture and persecution.<span> </span>Justice must prevail!</span></div>
