Astronomía de <st1:PersonName ProductID="la Facultad" w:st="on">la
Facultad</st1:PersonName> de Ciencias (Universidad de <st1:PersonName
ProductID="la República" w:st="on">la República</st1:PersonName>), en el marco
del programa de investigación sobre cuerpos menores del sistema solar, ha venido
realizando un estudio independiente sobre el fenómeno observado el pasado Lunes
4 de Abril a las aproximadamente 3:45 hora local en los Departamentos de Colonia
y San José.<BR><SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</SPAN>Luego de analizar los testimonios aparecidos en la prensa nacional, en
particular los informes de los pilotos, y luego de recabar información de
pobladores de diversas localidades como ser: Juan Lacaze, Colonia Cosmopolita,
Ecilda Paullier, Cañada Grande y San José de Mayo, podemos señalar las
siguientes conclusiones de carácter preliminar:<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>1) El fenómeno
luminoso observado llevaba una trayectoria general rectilínea de Oeste-Este. La
mayor parte de los testimonios son coincidentes de que la trayectoria era
horizontal a descendente. Esto no es contradictorio con los reportes de una
trayectoria "levemente ascendente" reportadas por los pilotos, ya que de
tratarse de un fenómeno de gran altura (mas de <st1:metricconverter
ProductID="20 km" w:st="on">20 km</st1:metricconverter> por encima de la
superficie), una trayectoria descendente puede ser apreciada, por una razón de
perspectiva, como ascendente. Es lo que ocurre con las "estrellas fugaces" que a
veces parecen ir subiendo y no bajando, cuando en todos los casos son partículas
de polvo que se introducen en la atmósfera acercándose a la superficie de la
tierra.<BR><SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>2)
Las personas que llegaron a ver el fenómeno indican que tenía un brillo en su
fase máxima comparable a <st1:PersonName ProductID="la Luna Llena" w:st="on">la
Luna Llena</st1:PersonName>, teniendo como referencia esa noche la presencia de
<st1:PersonName ProductID="la Luna" w:st="on">la Luna</st1:PersonName> en una
fase cercana al Cuarto Menguante. Además reportaron un aumento del brillo y
luego una disminución, con cambios de coloración.<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>3) Muchos pobladores
de diversas partes de los Departamentos de Colonia y San José reportaron
escuchar un estruendo que hizo vibrar los vidrios de las ventanas algunos
minutos después de observar el resplandor.<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>En función de los
elementos anteriores, reafirmamos nuestra hipótesis inicial de que el fenómeno
observado se trata de un meteoro brillante, lo que es conocido como un bólido o
"bola de fuego". Nos referimos al ingreso a la atmósfera de material rocoso
proveniente de un asteroide o de hielo de un cometa que al ingresar a la
atmósfera se calienta por fricción con el gas atmosférico. A una altura de cerca
de <st1:metricconverter ProductID="100 km" w:st="on">100
km</st1:metricconverter> por encima de la superficie comienza la vaporización
del material y el calentamiento de gas atmosférico circundante, lo que se
manifiesta como un objeto brillante y de aparente gran tamaño. El brillo y la
coloración que vaya adquiriendo la bola de gas incandescente dependerá del
tamaño del objeto inicial, de su velocidad previo al ingreso a la atmósfera y de
su composición química. Coloraciones amarillas, rojas o blanco azuladas son
típicas de diferentes fases de la trayectoria en la atmósfera. El objeto ingresa
con una velocidad superior a los 10 km/seg (o sea mas de 3600 km/hora) y
comienza a desacelerarse por fricción con el gas. Al tener una velocidad
superior a la del sonido en el aire, se produce una onda de choque que al
alcanzar la superficie produce el estruendo escuchado, conocido como "boom
sónico". Es un fenómeno similar al que ocurre cuando un avión "rompe la barrera
del sonido". Como el sonido viaja a una velocidad mucho menor que la de la luz y
estamos frente a un fenómeno que ocurre a varias decenas de kms del observador,
el "boom sónico" se escucha entre 2 y 5 minutos después de observarse el bólido,
coincidiendo con el reporte los testigos.<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Dado el brillo del
bólido observado se trataría de una roca de una tonelada o mas de peso
(equivalente a una esfera de cerca de 1m de diámetro) antes de ingresar a la
atmósfera. Gran parte o la totalidad del material se consume en su trayecto en
la atmósfera, pudiendo llegar a la superficie algún o algunos meteoritos. Los
meteoritos alcanzan la superficie con velocidades muy inferiores a su velocidad
original, sin dejar cráteres de considerables dimensiones ni produciendo
vibraciones por el impacto. Resta por determinar la trayectoria final del
bólido, para poder realizar la búsqueda de los posibles meteoritos. Para ello
solicitamos la colaboración de los pobladores que observaron el bólido a fin de
que nos reporten más información sobre la trayectoria observada. (Al final de
este informe hay un teléfono para comunicarse con nosotros.) Según los datos que
hemos recabado el bólido fue observado hasta la zona centro-sur del Departamento
de San José (km 70 de ruta 1), estimándose que el posible lugar final de impacto
podría estar entre esa zona y el departamento de Montevideo. Encontrar un
meteorito "fresco" permitiría, no solo resolver definitivamente este problema,
sino además aportar un material de gran valor científico para continuar nuestras
investigaciones sobre los cuerpos menores que constituyeron las prietas
fundamentales de nuestro sistema solar.<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>En función de los
elementos anteriores consideramos como descartable la hipótesis de se pudiera
tratar de un misil o nave de combate como se ha manejado por algunas fuentes, ya
que no existen elementos que hagan necesaria la consideración de una hipótesis
que por su parte supone una situación de gran riesgo y vulnerabilidad para la
población. Quizás estemos frente a un fenómeno mediático típico del estado de
alerta por conflictos bélicos que se vive a nivel mundial, y que en particular
experimenta el personal de aviación.<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Finalmente queremos
destacar que en conjunto con el Observatorio Astronómico "Los Molinos" se ha
realizado el diseño de un sistema de detección de bólidos basado en cámaras que
observan todo el cielo, que se <BR>planea instalar en varias localidades de todo
el país. Lamentablemente por dificultades presupuestales el prototipo inicial no
está en funcionamiento, lo que hubiera significado un aporte invalorable para la
resolución de este fenómeno. Esperamos contar con este dispositivo en un futuro
