Carnaval, realizado el pasado 26 de enero. Ahora falta el tradicional Desfile de
Llamadas (candombe) por los barrios Sur y Palermo, que será el próximo

remota por lo menos a mediados del siglo</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY

dice que el Carnaval uruguayo es el más largo del mundo (40 días sin contar el
Carnaval Infantil en las primeras semanas de enero). Si bien su desarrollo
se extiende a todo el país con importantes eventos en varias ciudades del
interior, las principales actividades se realizan en Montevideo. La
inauguración, desde este año (para que no se junte con el inicio de las clases
en el sistema de enseñanza), se hace a mediados de enero, la celebración se
extiende por todo febrero, culminando a principios de marzo. Sólo 2 días, de
acuerdo al calendario, son feriados, aunque laborables para las empresas
privadas.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

(aunque no son las únicas), que no son antagónicas sino que más bien se
complementan: las murgas, de origen español, cuyas letras tienen un alto
contenido de humor y sátira social y política, <I>la voz del pueblo</I>, y
jugaron un importante papel socio-cultural durante la dictadura</SPAN><SPAN
lang=ES-UY style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"> (1973-84),</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt"> y el candombe, de origen afro-negro, que recrea los
orígenes africanos de los negros esclavos y la época colonial, con sus trajes,
cantos y bailes típicos, culturas y religiones, y su evolución natural hasta
nuestros días. Se suman las otras categorías Humoristas, Parodistas y
Revistas.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

preparación del Carnaval comienza a mediados del año anterior, tiempo en que se
preparan los trajes, letras, músicas, etc.; elección en diciembre de las Reinas
del Carnaval y las Llamadas de las 18 Zonas o distritos descentralizados de
Montevideo, bajo el auspicio de los respectivos gobiernos locales;

candidatas a Reinas de Carnaval y de Llamadas son electas en los barrios a
través de eventos organizados por los órganos del Gobierno Local (Junta Local y
Concejo Vecinal) y organizaciones sociales, vecinales, cooperativas, etc. de
cada Zona o Distrito, con el apoyo de los departamentos de Turismo, de Cultura y
de Descentralización de <st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la Intendencia">la
Intendencia</st1:PersonName> de Montevideo. En esos eventos se eligen las Reinas
Zonales de ambas categorías. Los vecinos también tienen un importante papel en
la organización de las distintas actividades del Carnaval en los

fiesta popular uruguaya trasciende el Carnaval en sí mismo, representando una
parte importante de la cultura que se refleja -se festeja y se exhibe- en
la "época" del Carnaval. Pues estas actividades, en diferentes formas, se
“practican” durante todo el año en eventos oficiales, talleres, espectáculos y
festivales, y espontáneamente en los barrios, tanto en lo que se refiere a las
murgas como al candombe. También se trasmite por tradición oral de generación en
generación, recordándose -en asados y fiestas familiares y de amigos- las
antiguas músicas y letras.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

preparación del Carnaval pasa por la elección (en diciembre del año

de Niños a principios del mes de enero (con desfile y concurso incluidos),
que reune decenas de agrupaciones infantiles, y a más de 1.000 niños; y por lo
que no se ve que es la confección de los vestuarios, las letras y músicas, los
ensayos, los vecinos reuniéndose para organizar sus tablados y corsos en los
barrios, etc.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

comenzó oficialmente este año el</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY

enero con su Desfile Inaugural por <st1:PersonName w:st="on"
ProductID="la Av.">la<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt">
Av.</SPAN></st1:PersonName><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"> 18</SPAN> de Julio, en
el centro de la ciudad, donde participan todos los que de una manera u otra
estarán en las distintas actividades oficiales y en los barrios: los cabezudos,
los carros alegóricos, las reinas y princesas, agrupaciones y conjuntos (en sus
diferentes categorías: murgas, negros y lubolos, humoristas, parodistas y
revistas), artistas populares, etc. Desde el año pasado se adelantó para
que no interfiera el final del Carnaval con el comienzo de las clases en la
enseñanza, cosa que ocurría años anteriores.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

Los festejos se extienden hasta principios de marzo, realizándose actuaciones
todas las noches en los "tablados" o escenarios populares (fijos y móviles) y
comerciales en los barrios, y en los corsos o desfiles en distintas zonas o
distritos, así como en el Teatro Municipal de Verano, donde se realiza el
Concurso Oficial de Agrupaciones de Carnaval. Cuarenta agrupaciones de las
diferentes categoría participan en este año 2006 en el Concurso, en
las categorías murgas, sociedades de negros y lubolos, humoristas, parodistas y
revistas.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

segunda gran concentración es el Desfile de Las Llamadas por los viejos y
populares barrios Sur y Palermo, a pocas cuadras del centro de la ciudad, que

encuentro de los "negros" esclavos de la colonia (compartiendo su cultura y
orígen africano), en la libertad del Candombe, que se convirtió en un aporte
fundamental de la cultura afro a la música y cultura
uruguaya.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

Sin dudas esta es la mayor concentración popular y la que atrae mayor cantidad
de visitantes. Relacionada tradicionalmente con el Carnaval, su realización
podría ubicarse en cualquier fecha. De hecho, se realizan espontáneamente
durante el año, en distintos barrios de Montevideo, en algunos casos todas las
semanas. Siendo otra fecha importante, aunque informalmente, el 6 de
enero.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

Punta Gorda). La primera vice reina es Daiana Sequeira, que tiene 15 años,

ProductID="la Zona">la Zona</st1:PersonName> 14 de Montevideo (Paso Molino,
Belvedere, <st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="La Teja">La

Prado Norte y Sayago Oeste). Como segunda vice reina fue electa Karina
Fernández, de 20 años, vecina del Cerro, quien participó en representación de

mayor manifestación popular de nuestro pueblo desde los

Comienzan a funcionar por el mes de octubre, con la organización de la elección
de Reinas del Carnaval y de las Llamadas de la respectiva Zona, y pasan por las
diferentes actividades en febrero y marzo. Parte de su labor, es conseguir
fondos locales (a través de rifas, actividades y aportes de empresas y
comercios) poniendo en práctica políticas de cooperación público-privado y de
cogestión en las tareas del gobierno local. Estos fondos no sólo servirán para
llevar adelante las actividades, sino que serán necesarios para la realización
de los premios y concursos en los corsos y tablados, pero antes, los premios
para las reinas de Carnaval y Llamadas de la respectiva
Zona.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

vienen realizando en las costas uruguayas, contando con la presencia de artistas
nacionales reconocidos que actúan en diversas localidades, que se realizan desde
