</SPAN>Si nos guiamos por la "historia oficial", la que escribieron los
"ganadores": no existían las mujeres; los indios eran unos "salvajes" que se
oponían a la "modernización" del "país", representaban la "barbarie" y no
querían que los "civilizaran para vivir mejor". Los "negros" sólo servían para
el trabajo duro, aunque en realidad eran unos "haraganes" que debía
castigárseles para que trabajaran en beneficio del
"patrón".<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

nombres y apellidos en los libros de historia. Cuando alguno sobresale, como el
caso de Joaquín Lenzina, más conocido como Ansina, hay que inventarle una
historia "creíble". Como en este caso es un "negro", nos enseñaron que era "un
sirviente que le cebaba mate a Artigas".<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

</SPAN>Es probable que realmente pensaran que, como era negro, debería ser un
sirviente. ¿Qué otra cosa podría ser? ¿Un militar destacado? ¿Un payador y
poeta? ¿Un líder de la comunidad negra? ¿Un prócer como Don Pepe
Artigas?<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

me llaman y Ansina yo soy...". Es que, aunque no figuran en los libros de
historia, los afro descendientes tuvieron un papel importante en la revolución
artiguista. Tanto es así que un número grande de esa comunidad</SPAN><SPAN
lang=ES-UY style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'MS Mincho'">
(varios cientos)</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'MS Mincho'"> acompañó a
Artigas al Paraguay en</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY
style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'MS Mincho'">
1820.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

derrotado, pero no abatido. Después de las batallas de Tacuarembó y Cambay,
entre muertos, prisioneros, oficiales desertores con sus batallones, de sus
8.000 combatientes le quedaban solamente pocos cientos de lanceros/as, en su
mayoría afro, indios y algunos oficiales. Los caciques del Chaco se ofrecieron
para seguir la lucha, pero Artigas estaba cercado por los ejércitos portugués y
de Entre Ríos, acaudillado por Pancho Ramírez, y por otro lado los bañados de
Iberá. La única salida era cruzar a Paraguay.</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY

se comenzaron a gestar nuestras tradiciones. El pueblo oriental artiguista,
formado fundamentalmente por indios, negros y gauchos, fue la semilla de los
valores que, por tradición oral, dieron forma a nuestra nacionalidad, donde "los
más infelices eran los más privilegiados", como quería Don José. Ansina fue uno
de los más destacados.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

Artigas establece explícitamente que también los "negros libres" tienen derecho
a la tierra y en una carta de Artigas ya derrotado a su hijo mayor, pidiendo que
a los dos ancianos esclavos que tuvo la familia Artigas "no les falte para los
vicios".<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

porque sus mismos difusores se repliegan luego prudentemente por un tiempo,
confiados quizás de que algo del veneno paralizante que derramaron haga su
efecto pero temerosos de un enfrentamiento directo que los dejaría muy mal
parados. Como sé que vuelven, siempre vuelven, he aquí mi respuesta, que por

principal definición de pertenencia (comentario ante el escrito de Cavia que lo
calumnia).<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

como Protector de los Pueblos Libres afirmó: "Los indios tienen el principal
derecho". Esta frase, una de las más citadas, no fue comprendida aún en su pleno
significado. Maggi empezó a advertirlo en su libro "Artigas y su hijo...". Es
una clave importante.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT

expropiación de los "malos europeos y peores americanos" y se proclama a título
expreso el derecho de los negros "libres" a la propiedad de la tierra "de tal
manera que los más infelices sean los más privilegiados" (textual, en el
Reglamento Provisorio). ¿Por qué expresamente sólo para los negros
libres?<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

face="Times New Roman"> Porque básicamente existían cuatro
situaciones entre los afro orientales:<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

que habían optado por la comunidad libertaria, elección afín a la cultura de sus
mayores. Eran hombres y mujeres afro que se habían refugiado en el monte y en el
"lejano Norte" charrúa. Los jóvenes en su mayoría integraron los "batallones de
libertos" artiguistas donde nadie reclamaba papeles para comprobar que no eran
"fugados". Se hacían reconocer como libres con sus propias lanzas, y eran fuerza
esencial de <st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la Revoluci?n. Para">la
Revolución. Para</st1:PersonName> estos grupos estaba previsto (como demuestra

negro; en los hechos, era la misma política seguida por Artigas años antes,
cuando reclamaba "para sí" la inmensa estancia de Arerunguá (en realidad,
Artigas la reclamaba para la nación charrúa).<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

podría justificarse. Recuérdese: 1) lo compra advertido que es un esclavo
peligroso, con antecedentes de fugas y líder de levantamientos (muy mal
negocio); 2) le da la libertad de inmediato, el mismo día (peor aún); 3) lo
recomienda para el Batallón de Pardos Libertos del Cabildo de Montevideo (como
quien dice, lo dona al gobierno colonial); 4) Ansina está al mando de su
batallón cuando los esclavos de Montevideo se levantan en 1803 y se fugan por el
Portón de San Pedro, hacia las tolderías charrúas, sin que el batallón de pardos
tenga tiempo de reprimirlos (¿Ansina era muy lento?); 5) Ansina acompaña a
Artigas en todas sus campañas y en todos los años de exilio (¿no es algo
excéntrico para un hombre como Artigas, que duerme en el suelo, legisla desde
una cabeza de vaca, y que se desprende de la espada de Mayo para recuperar la
lanza indígena, tener un africano liberto para que le cebe el
mate?).<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

a título expreso la "abolición de la esclavitud". ¡Rigurosamente cierto! No
podía hacerlo, como ningún indio, ningún afrooriental y ningún gaucho podía

siempre (¡en la historia de toda América!) la hipócrita resolución de los
poderosos que modernizaban sus formas de opresión.</SPAN></B><B

entregar tierras a los negros "esclavos" si éstos no eran considerados sujetos
de derecho, sino propiedad de otros seres humanos? Automáticamente esta decisión
hubiera significado entregar tierras a los propietarios de
esclavos.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: ES"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Entonces ¿Artigas debió proclamar la
abolición, como aconsejaba Inglaterra? Desconfiemos, siempre, de las sugerencias
de las potencias coloniales.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

próceres de América, aspiraba a mucho más que una mera ley específica: aspiraba
a una constitución federal que dejara a cada pueblo libre de actuar según sus

de esclavos exigían al propietario la manutención de los negros ancianos ya no
aptos para el trabajo; cuando la esclavitud dejó de ser rentable</SPAN><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: ES">, <B>la abolición fue el cínico
recurso para deshacerse de estos ancianos y lanzarlos a la </B><SPAN
style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold">"<B>libre</B>"<B>
mendicidad.</B></SPAN></SPAN><SPAN
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: ES"> En cambio, cuando Artigas,
ya derrotado, habla a su hijo sobre los dos ancianos negros que habían sido
esclavos de su padre, insiste: "debes ocuparte de que no les falte para sus

y la "libertad de vientres" significaban el derecho de los blancos a decidir

decreto que establecía el servicio militar obligatorio por tiempo indefinido
para todos los ex-esclavos jóvenes (así procedió el gobierno uruguayo en tiempos

Grande</st1:PersonName>)</B>.</SPAN><SPAN

decretaron la abolición sino que procuraron destruir las bases ignominiosas de

da la tierra también a los "negros libres" se enmarca en la filosofía proclamada

style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold">"<B>promover la libertad civil y religiosa en
toda su extensión imaginable</B>"</SPAN> </SPAN><SPAN

no dar</SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; mso-ansi-language: ES"> NINGUN

interpretación ambigua a un Cabildo</SPAN><SPAN

Artigas tenía claro que su gente era principalmente aquella que todavía no sabía
leer, que se regía por códigos orales.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

desarrolló una política mucho más audaz, seguramente asesorado por Ansina y las

style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: ES"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Sentó jurisprudencia en el caso de Ana
Gascue, la esclava que fue a verlo desde Montevideo, para pedir por su propia
libertad. En tanto no se hagan las leyes de la libertad, sentenció y son sus
palabras, siempre debe facilitarse el triunfo concreto de la libertad sobre la
oprobiosa esclavatura. Se asesoró con Ansina durante cincuenta y cinco años, y
las propias palabras de Ansina, generalmente prudente, no nos dejan duda de la
ideología que unía a ambos : "Asco tengo del negrero" afirma Ansina; y "sólo
Artigas sabe hacia dónde voy" nos recuerda, insinuando su relacionamiento con
las hermandades libertarias afroamericanas.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

protector de los morenos en armas de Soriano y Colonia, también entendió
perfectamente lo que parecen no comprender algunos teóricos actuales de

El</st1:PersonName> Reglamento Provisorio era solo una parte de una política
agraria más amplia, que reservaba grandes extensiones de tierra para aquellos
pueblos originarios y afroamericanos que quisieran vivir en comunidad y en
Naturaleza.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

Es increíble que tengamos que volver a reflexionar sobre estas cosas, pero se ve
que gente muy poderosa que no da la cara pero tiene influencia en los medios
está desarrollando nuevas versiones de la llamada "Leyenda Negra"

afroamericanas tejieron redes solidarias para sus miembros, redes secretas que
iban desde Haití a Montevideo, y por el Oeste hasta Colombia y los yungas
altiplánicos del Sur. Estas redes se encubrieron con rituales religiosos
africanos y sincréticos y su presencia explica algunos sucesos extraordinarios
de la historia americana.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

face="Times New Roman"> Estas redes unificaron el panteón africano,
y por eso de los cientos de entidades espirituales africanas sólo unas decenas,
siempre las mismas, se adoran en América, desde Cuba a los santuarios Umbanda de

face="Times New Roman"> También los guaraní cristianos tenían sus
redes continentales y muchas veces convergían con las afroamericanas, en un
espíritu de protección mutua contra los poderes coloniales y

ocurría. En Cartagena de Indias, por ejemplo, cuando nacía un niño en el
Palenque (zona afro liberada y fortificada) los "negros cimarrones" viajaban con
el bebé hasta una aldea indígena para que tuviera un "padrino" protector
integrante de un pueblo originario. Estos rituales de padrinazgo eran parte de
la alianza afro indígena que permitió la supervivencia de las zonas de
libertad.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

dominación española. Por tener este origen es que la comparsa es una expresión
de tradiciones, donde cada uno de sus componentes tiene un altísimo valor
ancestral.<BR><SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</SPAN>Básicamente las formas más comunes de presentarse la comparsa es a través
de su modalidad de desfile callejero donde se desarrollan las coreografías de
sus personajes típicos al sonar de los tambores, donde, en su versión moderna no
existen la expresión cantada, su otra modalidad de presentación es el
espectáculo para teatro."<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT

que "Candombe es la denominación genérica que le adjudican a las expresiones del
arte musical afrouruguayo. El mismo puede entenderse por la ejecución del ritmo
con los tambores, el paso de la danza, las expresiones coreográficas. Es una
expresión de neto corte de las artes de los afrouruguayos, dado su origen
religioso esta expresión está caracterizada por la presencia de personajes y
elementos de alta y profundas tradiciones culturales.<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Los tambores son los
componente más emblemáticos, su composición básica es: </SPAN><B

comparsa, cada uno de ellos contiene en si mismo profundas tradiciones que
nos recuerda y concilia con nuestros pasado histórico, dentro de las expresiones
artísticas de los negros uruguayos, representan a nuestros ancestros africanos
en diferentes funciones, que implicaban acciones específicas y mantienen una
profunda connotación religiosa. Lo que relaciona a la comparsa con sus orígenes
más puros. En una misma comparsa es común ver un gran número de ellos.<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Las bailarinas son otro de
los grupo que participan en este cortejo, forman dentro de la agrupación
una serie de pequeños conjuntos que realizan coreografías, al paso de típico del
candombe. Este grupo se complementa con bailarines hombres, que en un número
mucho menor, también desarrollan coreografías al paso típico.<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>La vedette son
personajes, que se incluyeron en la comparsa a partir mediados de siglo, pues
ella no forma parte de las tradiciones africanas, a pesar de lo cual esta se
adapto muy bien a esta expresión.<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Los personajes que portan
los denominados trofeos: banderas, estandarte, estrellas y medialunas, se pueden
repetir en gran número en una expresión de calle su colorido, y despliegue
tienen mucho que ver con la imagen coreográfica de todo el conjunto.<BR><SPAN

desarrolla a lo largo de la calle Isla de Flores que cruza los tradicionales
barrios Sur y Palermo, en pleno centro de la ciudad, lugar donde, desde mediados

face="Times New Roman">años, que sin duda fue junto con su danza, la expresión
cultural y religiosa por excelencia de los negros orientales. Tres siglos más
tarde, constituye una expresión artístico-musical que ha impregnado a nuestra
sociedad, y que hoy la identifica y representa en el mundo entero.<BR><SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>En cada barrio de Montevideo
se escucha el resonar de una "cuerda". ¿A quién no envuelve con su gozadera?
¿Quién no se mueve cuando arranca la madera, la clave y suben los tambores?
También a nuestra Zona le tiemblan las entrañas y casi sin querer le brota el
tarareo de una melodía que del candombe nace y al candombe

"Guerreros de la selva", "Al compás del tamboril", "Añoranzas negras", y
