Acuabé (la que recuerda a la lluvia) me impresionó su mirada penetrante, con
ojos negros profundos, pelo lacio igual de oscuro y apenas un metro cincuenta y
poco de estatura, su estampa formidable me hizo recordar todo lo que había leído
sobre nuestros pueblos originarios, su marido, un uruguayo que hace dos décadas
vive en Porto Alegre oficio un poco de traductor pues Acuabé habla mal el
portugués y entiende menos el español, su lengua étnica es el charrúa, o una
aproximación a lo que sería esa lengua. Es notoriamente diferente en su
expresión a los guaraníes y se preocupa de marcar sus diferencias con los
hermanos Kaingang.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

como dice el acta rubricada por el gran Barón

Estados Unidos se embanderó totalmente en la "<I>escuela de la ayuda mutua</I>"
creada por sus contemporáneos británicos, el pastor Andrés Bell y el cuáquero
José Lancaster. Mientras este último intentaba imponer su reforma en
Norteamérica en</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt">
1816,</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt"> Catalá y Codina trabó
amistad en Baltimore con Manuel Dorrego -obligado al destierro por Pueyrredón-,
quien desde ese entonces y más adelante al volver al sur le insistiría para
instaurar tal sistema educativo en el Plata. A lo largo de un año y medio, al
momento de cruzar el <I>río grande como mar</I> , había organizado un centenar
de escuelas en Buenos Aires.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

cualidades del método aludido, sin dudas fue un paso evolutivo de la educación
en ese momento; hasta el mismo Artigas (cuando no), le dio su visto bueno a una
incipiente experiencia -fue la primer escuela lancasteriana de Sudamérica-
introducida por el cura chileno Solano García en</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY
style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"> 1818 </SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">en
aulas de Arroyo de <st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la China">la
China</st1:PersonName> (actual Concepción), uno de los parajes favoritos del
Prócer. Seguro intento de medir las probables mejoras de su escuelita de
"<I>indios, negros y blancos</I>", al decir de Ansina, en Villa Purificación,
perfilando la superior <I>Escuela de <st1:PersonName w:st="on"
ProductID="la Patria">la Patria</st1:PersonName></I> cuyos destinos encomendó a
Fray Benito Lamas en</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"> 1815
</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">sobre la base de uno de sus
desvelos prioritarios, que los <I>orientales fueran tan ilustrados como
valientes</I>. Y todos ellos sin excepción. Recuérdese tan solo alguna
disposición del Montevideo colonial: "<I>no se ha de permitir se mezclen en
<st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la Escuela">la Escuela</st1:PersonName> los
hijos de padres españoles con los de los negros o pardos... haciéndoles entender
a éstos la notable diferencia suya a aquellos</I>".<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

labor y el pertinaz despliegue de Catalá y Codina, tan elevado como requerido
educador. Entre las primeras resoluciones del Gobierno instalado a partir de

Declaratoria</st1:PersonName> de Independencia figura la siguiente, fechada
el</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"> 26</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY
style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt"> de febrero de</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY
style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"> 1826:</SPAN><SPAN lang=ES-UY style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt">
"<I>en todos los pueblos cabeza de Departamento se creará una escuela por el
Sistema Mutuo Lancasteriano por el mismo Decreto se nombra Director General a
Don José Catalá y Codina</I>".<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

influyente preceptor, discurre por un andarivel bastante común de la época:
unitario, de total beneplácito al advenimiento del Imperio Británico -sus clases
eran un día en idioma castellano y otro en inglés- "adulador del portuguesismo
primero y luego del brasilerismo, esa burguesía urbana, hacendada y negociante,
siempre positivista", como bien la definió Zum
Felde.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

deslumbrar hasta el hartazgo a aquel círculo tan dominante, también era masón:
miembro del Gran Oriente ya en su España natal. Lecor lideraba la logia que
compartía con Durán, Pío Bianqui y Juanicó en Montevideo, por solo mencionar a
los antes citados; Bernardino Rivadavia -quien le diera el gran espaldarazo al
propio Catalá y Codina en la vecina orilla para desarrollar su técnica
formativa-, integró una de las tantas tendencias francmasónicas, y ni hablar,
<st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la Orden">la
<I>Orden</I></st1:PersonName><I> de los Caballeros Orientales</I> que
predominara en <st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la Cruzada">la
Cruzada</st1:PersonName> de los Treinta y Tres. Sus órganos de prensa:
<st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="La Aurora"><I>La
Aurora</I></st1:PersonName><I>, El Pampero, El Aguacero</I>, tuvieron en Catalá
y Codina, cuando el viento favorable sopló hacia ese lado, una de sus plumas más
enconadas lo que valió cinco meses de cárcel en el histórico</SPAN><SPAN
lang=ES-UY style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"> 1825.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>

que otras fueran las trampas utilizadas en Salsipuedes y quizás menos
