latinoamericana, que tienen en común el compromiso y el sueño de construir
juntos un mundo mejor, basado en principios y valores democráticos de
solidaridad, igualdad y justicia social, al decir de José Artigas, <EM>en toda
su extensión imaginable-</EM></FONT></SPAN></FONT></SPAN></SPAN></P>

desde su juventud en la <EM>opción preferencial por los pobres</EM>, fundó en el
año 1945 <ST1:PERSONNAME productid="la Juventud Obrera"
w:st="on"><ST1:PERSONNAME productid="la Juventud" w:st="on">la
Juventud</ST1:PERSONNAME> Obrera</ST1:PERSONNAME> Cristiana en su San José
natal. Poco tiempo después descubre su vocación religiosa y de servicio social,
y se hace monja de las Hermanitas de <ST1:PERSONNAME productid="la Asunci?n. En"
w:st="on">la Asunción. En</ST1:PERSONNAME> la década del 60, estuvo casi 10
años, con su comunidad religiosa de la Congregación de Hermanitas de la
Asunción, en los campamentos mineros, en las minas de Siglo XX, en Potosí,
Bolivia. Trabajando en la organización popular y en tareas de enfermería. Antes
había estado en Francia y Argentina. De vuelta en Uruguay, trabaja en barrios
populares (el Cerro, el Cerrito y las Acacias) con su Comunidad de Hermanas,
integrándose al barrio, promoviendo la organización popular, las comisiones de
fomento, etc., y en la atención de la
salud.</FONT></SPAN></FONT></SPAN></SPAN></P>

style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"><SPAN lang=ES-UY

que es antes del golpe de estado) la llevan presa las FFAA, acusándola de
"evangelizar" que es "concientizar", según le increpaba un oficial. Luego,
en 1973, la llevan encapuchada al cuartel del Km 14, de ahí la pasan
a <ST1:PERSONNAME productid="la C￡rcel" w:st="on">la Cárcel</ST1:PERSONNAME> de
Mujeres (presas políticas) de Punta Rieles, donde pasa más de un
año.</FONT></SPAN></FONT></SPAN></SPAN></P>

style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"><SPAN lang=ES-UY

al cumplir los 83 años, continúa ejerciendo su vocación pastoral desde los
pobres, colaborando en diferentes tareas en el barrio y apoyando la
descentralización y la participación vecinal en la Zona 11 de
Montevideo.</FONT></SPAN></FONT></SPAN></SPAN></P>

face="Times New Roman"> "Ante todo quiero agradecer a las y
los organizadores de este acto, el honor que me confirieron al pedirme que haga
una reseña de esta MUJER con mayúscula, de esas que hacen que las mujeres
sintamos orgullo de serlo.</FONT></P>

face="Times New Roman"> Trataré, aunque no es fácil la tarea,
de sintetizar tanta vida, tanto amor, tanto compromiso en unas pocas
líneas…</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Para empezar a describirla les diré
que fue invitada a este acto sin mencionarle que sería una de las homenajeadas.
De lo contrario corríamos el riesgo de no contar con su presencia… Siempre lejos
del brillo y la figuración.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Toda una larga vida al servicio de los
más humildes, de los más desfavorecidos, siempre del lado de los más débiles,
acompañando desde el llano, en el día a día, en la lucha cotidiana y
anónima.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Empezando por el trabajo social en la
periferia de su San José natal (que reivindica con orgullo cada vez que tiene
una oportunidad), siguiendo por su consagración religiosa para mejor servir a
Cristo, su modelo de vida y compromiso. Y luego, junto con sus hermanas de
congregación: el Cerro en Montevideo, los mineros y campesinos de Bolivia, la
mina siglo XX en Potosí, especialmente las mujeres de los mineros y la defensa
de sus derechos, la defensa contra la violencia doméstica y el estigma del
alcohol.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"><SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</SPAN>Luego, <SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>la vuelta a ese
Uruguay convulsionado de fines de los 60.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Y desde esa época empezó a marcar surcos y
sembrar en el barrio: el convento de la calle Chimborazo , luego la casita de
Las Acacias en la calle Emilio Zolá, que seguramente muchas y muchos conocerán,
donde las Hermanitas de <st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la Asunci?n">la
Asunción</st1:PersonName> al servicio de la familia obrera, formaron parte del
barrio, acompañando a las y los trabajadores, a los hombres y mujeres del barrio
en la lucha diaria por una vida mejor<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</SPAN>y por la conquista de sus derechos.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Y allí ella, con los grupos de
jóvenes: acompañando, marcando presencia, promoviendo los mejores valores de
cada uno, promoviendo el compromiso con su tiempo y con su clase. Con las
mujeres: siempre oído atento y apoyo incondicional; en los grupos de reflexión
de <st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la Parroquia">la
Parroquia</st1:PersonName>; en el Movimiento Obrero de Acción
Católica.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Su única arma: su profunda fe en ese
Dios al que consagró su vida, pero sobre todo y encarnándolo, su profunda fe en
el ser humano y la capacidad de este de transformarse y transformar su entorno
para construir un mundo mejor.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> ¡Qué peligro!</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"><SPAN style="mso-tab-count: 1">
</SPAN>Así lo valoró la dictadura militar y sin haber usado nunca un arma, ni
pertenecer a ninguna organización política, fue detenida primero en 1972, en
averiguaciones, y luego en 1973, cuando se la llevaron encapuchada y fue
encarcelada en <st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la C￡rcel">la
Cárcel</st1:PersonName> de Punta de Rieles.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> ¡Si tendrá fuerza el AMOR!</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Y al salir volvió al barrio y
continuó<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>durante todos estos años
su trabajo incansable, indoblegable… Porque no es una monjita dócil, para
nada…</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Y cuando se enoja frente a alguna
injusticia, acto de corrupción, etc, es Bravísima!!!</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Un amigo que mucho la quiere dice
siempre que uno de los personajes más subversivos del barrio es ella, <SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>la monja Marta (como la conocen y le
dicen los que la quieren).</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Sí, porque ella, Marta, está siempre,
siempre, allí donde hay algo para cambiar, una injusticia, algo nuevo para
construir, alguien que sufre.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Cuando pienso en ella, la veo como una
arañita tejedora. En su ir y venir por el barrio, en la feria, en la visita a
los vecinos y las vecinas, en <st1:PersonName w:st="on"
ProductID="la Escuela">la Escuela</st1:PersonName>, en el Centro Abuelo Oscar,
en <st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la Policl￭nica">la
Policlínica</st1:PersonName>, en <st1:PersonName w:st="on"
ProductID="la Comuna Mujer"><st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la Comuna">la
Comuna</st1:PersonName> Mujer</st1:PersonName>, en el Centro Comunal Zonal, en
<st1:PersonName w:st="on" ProductID="la Comisi?n">la Comisión</st1:PersonName>
vecinal, siempre tejiendo, contribuyendo a construir esas redes de solidaridad y
compromiso con las y los otros, tan necesarias, que han sido tan dañadas y que
urge reconstruir.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Incansable, tanto, que a los que somos
un poco más jóvenes a veces nos da vergüenza.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Humilde, apostando siempre al
colectivo.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Siendo una mujer de fe, nunca intenta
convencer ni convertir. Predica con su ejemplo y su compromiso.</FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> Sin ser ingenua, apuesta a lo mejor
del ser humano aún en los casos donde se hace difícil descubrirlo.</FONT></P>

face="Times New Roman"> Optimista. Profundamente convencida de
que si nos unimos y trabajamos codo a codo sin prejuicios ni sectarismos
podremos lograr construir un país y un mundo mejor, más justo y
solidario.</FONT></P>

face="Times New Roman"> Quiero terminar con unas palabras del
libro "La sal de la tierra" del monje benedictino Mamerto Menapace:
"</FONT><FONT face="Times New Roman"><EM>Tenemos que comprometer nuestras manos
en la siembra. Que la madrugada nos encuentre sembrando. Crear pequeños tablones
sembrados con cariño, con verdad, con desinterés, jugándonos limpiamente por la
luz en la penumbra del amanecer. Trabajo simple que nadie verá y que no será
noticia. Porque la única noticia auténtica de la siembra la da sólo la tierra y
la historia, y se llama cosecha</EM>…"</FONT></P>

congregación internacional, que se encuentra en 23 países, en pequeñas
comunidades, en barrios obreros o marginales. Nació a mediados del siglo XIX en
Francia, en el inicio de la industrialización, por iniciativa de Esteban Permet,
religioso Asuncionista, y Antonia Fage, que, ante la situación de injusticia en
que vivían los trabajadores, marcada por la dureza del trabajo, la inseguridad y
la pobreza, decidieron crear un proyecto de evangelización de la clase obrera y
empobrecida. Su obra se desarrolla en la inserción concreta en los barrios.
