1815 en Candelaria. La pieza fue recientemente hallada por el reconocido artista
misionero Gervasio Malagrida, quien lo encontró en medio de una remodelación de
su casa familiar en Posadas. “Estimamos que se trata del único original firmado
por Andresito que existe en Misiones, puesto que Aníbal Cambas (su abuelo)
fotografió en la década del 1930 gran parte del material documental que es

size=2><BR> La Unión Obrera Textil estaba en el
local de una antigua pizzería, en la calle Fraternidad, en el barrio
Conciliación. Eran dos habitaciones donde se amontonaban carteleras, pinceles,
tarros con engrudo, diarios para hacer planograf, estandartes usados con textos
que se volvían obsoletos rápidamente. Los nuevos aconteceres sindicales se
vivían de prisa. De las paredes colgaban piolas, donde se ponían a secar los
nuevos carteles. Algunas pocas sillas, bancos largos encimados, contra la pared,
completaban aquel desorden.<BR> Aquí entrábamos por
primera vez todos los que queríamos enterarnos del sindicato, del salario
mínimo, de las categorías del último convenio y buscar a alguien que fuera a la
puerta de la fábrica el día de cobro, para que nos ayudara a descubrir las
diferencias mirando el sobre del sueldo. Así empezamos a querer aquel lugar que
se llamaba Sindicato. En época de conflicto siempre había mucha gente, casi
funcionaba en la vereda, no cabíamos, cada día éramos más. Corría el año
1954.<BR> Algún domingo, cuando había Asamblea General,
la asamblea grande del gremio, se alquilaba otro local. Casi siempre se hacía en
el barrio del puerto, en la Ciudad Vieja. Calles angostas, húmedas y oscuras, se
llenaban de risas y colores al pasar las compañeras textiles que por decenas
iban llegando desde el Cerro, La Teja, Maroñas. Desde los bares, los
parroquianos salían a mirarlas como si fuera un espectáculo dominguero. Parecía
que esas mujeres iban oxigenando el barrio; mujeres obreras de todas las edades,
que caminaban por las aceras a paso firme. El ruido de tantos pies hablaba de
luchas que se avecinaban.<BR> El Boston era un viejo
club de boxeo que estaba en la calle Piedras y Yacaré, donde a veces nos
estremecía el pitar de los barcos de ultramar, saludando a Montevideo al llegar
o despidiéndose de ella al irse. Olía a viejas cervezas derramadas en el suelo
de madera y a tabaco. Tenía una claraboya con vidrios oscurecidos por el hollín,
que alguna mañana dejaba entrar un rayo de sol.<BR> El
ring de madera estaba situado en medio de la sala. Los dirigentes del gremio
subían a él voleando la pata entre las cuerdas y llevando su propia silla. Una
mesa del bar, que era traída en alto por algún voluntario, completaba el
escenario. La única luz eran los cuatro focos que iluminaban al ring: los
actores eran ahora nuestros dirigentes.<BR> El aire se
iba enrareciendo, mientras se llenaban los asientos y se oscurecían más los
rincones por el humo. Con el Boston de bote a bote, un tamborileo de dedos y
pies nerviosos, anunciaba que queríamos escuchar pronto a la Comisión Directiva
dando las noticias de la marcha del conflicto.<BR> Estas
fueron mis primeras asambleas, y las vivía como un espectáculo. Aún no entendía
muchas palabras del argot sindicalero, «moción de orden», «vamos a pasar a
cuarto intermedio», pero como nunca tuve problema en preguntar, me fui enterando
de lo que significaban y me fui apropiando de esa forma tan rara de hablar, que
después hice mía.<BR> Completaba el espectáculo la parte
oratoria. Me llamaba la atención la admiración que se tenía por Héctor Rodríguez
y por Eusebio Caetano y el respeto con que se escuchaban sus
intervenciones.<BR> Héctor, además de sus ocho horas
diarias en el telar, tenía formación universitaria, por lo cual conocía los dos
lenguajes. Hablaba sencillo y muy claro.<BR> Algunas
mujeres, muy pocas, subían al ring para hablar. Sin embargo siempre había una en
la mesa de la asamblea sacando actas.<BR> Las que se
atrevían a hablar eran Blanca Peralta o Delia Maldonado. Se destacaba Irene
Pérez por un muy buen manejo de la palabra. Yo en esa época no me daba cuenta
aún: Irene era una militante política muy disciplinada, era más política que
sindicalista, esa era la diferencia.<BR> De esos hombres
y mujeres, aprendí mucho en cada asamblea. Fueron mis tempranos ídolos. Idealicé
mis primeros años sindicales; para mí, mi Sindicato era el más combativo y no
aceptaba bromas de ningún compañero sobre la honestidad de nuestros
dirigentes.<BR> El sindicato era la única forma de lucha
que conocía. No conocí otra, hasta que llegaron a mis manos algunos libros. La
madre, de Gorki, recuerdo que me lo dio Blanca, despertó en mí nuevas
inquietudes.<BR> Descubrí que no bastaba «ir pa’
delante», solamente, como decíamos en la fábrica. Yo quería saber qué era
«táctica sindical» y qué era «estrategia frente a la patronal». Me empecé a
reunir con algunos anarcos de mi fábrica, los amigos que me abrieron las puertas
de la gran Biblioteca Popular del Cerro, allá donde se encuentran las calles
República Argentina y Chile. <FONT size=2 face=Arial><FONT size=2

<DIV> En los acuerdos, entrábamos a trabajar todos los
despedidos.<BR> A mí me tomaron como si fuese nueva:
cuando había entrado a Lana Uruguaya tenía sólo trece años, y no estaba
permitido por la ley que trabajaran niños menores de catorce
años.<BR> Nosotros transamos, pero a los dos meses me
suspendieron por falta de trabajo, hasta nuevo aviso, y no me volvieron a
llamar. Lo peor es que yo tampoco había cumplido las cien jornadas de trabajo
como nueva: la suspensión fue una trampa y caí en ella. No tenía derecho a
reclamar mi puesto de trabajo. El sindicato recién salía del desgaste de la
huelga y me tuve que aguantar en el molde.<BR> Era muy
común que te tomaran y te suspendieran «momentáneamente por falta de trabajo»
antes de cumplir las cien jornadas de trabajo. A las dos o tres semanas te
volvían a tomar y así hasta por dos años. Con esto impedían que te convirtieses
en un trabajador efectivo y te mantenían en una situación de inseguridad laboral
constante.<BR> Seguí militando en el sindicato, aunque
me costó mucho volver a trabajar en la industria; quedé en «la lista
negra».<BR> Hacía limpiezas en casas de familia y de
tarde me iba al sindicato, donde tenía mis amigas y compañeras. Luego empecé a
trabajar en pequeñas fábricas de tejidos de punto, cuando quedaba cesante volvía
a hacer limpiezas.<BR> No perdí contacto con el gremio.
Trabajé con Delia en la organización del Sindicato de Tejido de Punto. Era muy
difícil, eran fábricas muy pequeñas; teníamos que ir a la puerta de cada fábrica
y hablar una por una con las obreras.<BR> Tuve la suerte
de acompañar a Emilio Deconcilis y a Héctor Rodríguez en las primeras reuniones
de la Asamblea Consultiva Pro Central Única, en los locales de la Federación de
la Bebida y de la Federación de la Carne, donde participaban todos los
sindicatos.<BR> Marchábamos hacia la unidad de toda la
clase obrera, Autónomos y de la Unión General de Trabajadores, con recelo, pero
marchábamos juntos, organizando los primeros paros unitarios de toda la clase
obrera montevideana. Todo el conjunto de los trabajadores....y las mujeres
también.<BR> Yo seguía sin trabajo fijo. Hacía poco
había muerto mi padre. Mis hermanas se habían casado, quedé sola con mi madre y
había deudas en casa. Ese tiempo lo viví como un desborde de actividad, pero mi
madre sabía que yo igual traía el salario a casa y eso me permitía cierta
independencia.<BR> -Sos igual que tu padre -decía, por
mi militancia. No sé si le agradaba o le disgustaba, pero yo sentía su apoyo
silencioso.<BR> En 1957 acepté invitaciones de los
compañeros de la Juventud Socialista, que trabajaban por la formación de los
sindicatos agrícolas. Así conocí Paysandú, Artigas y Treinta y
Tres.<BR> En 1958 empecé a trabajar fija en SADIL. Allí
trabajé diez años, de los cuales ocho fui delegada. Vinieron las ocupaciones de
la fábrica, en lucha contra la desocupación.<BR> La
crisis de la década del 60 empezaba a hacer estragos y la lana se iba del país
sin industrializar. La política del gobierno fondomonetarista se hizo notar
enseguida. Nos entregaron atados de pies y manos al mercado norteamericano. Esto
tuvo durante varios años en lucha al gremio textil entero, en el intento
infructuoso de defender la industria nacional.<BR> La
ocupación de fábricas, del 64 al 68, fue un ejemplo de militancia de las
mujeres.<BR> Horas en la fábrica ocupada, sin ganar
dinero, las máquinas paradas, la fábrica fría. El gremio en pie de lucha. Yo me
había casado y ya tenía dos hijos. Las mujeres éramos la mayoría, nos turnábamos
para ir a casa, atender a los hijos y a las tareas del hogar y volvíamos a
entrar a la fábrica a seguir la huelga de brazos caídos. Duró mucho
tiempo.<BR> Discusiones, asambleas y marchas que sólo
sirvieron para fortalecer al gremio, y nada más, porque todo se jugaba en la
política nacional, y nosotros no decidíamos, estábamos lejos de la política.
Algunas de las fábricas, inevitablemente, cerraron y se fueron los capitales del
país.<BR> En esa época escribí mis primeros artículos en
Liberación, una publicación de dos hojitas que sacábamos en la Agrupación Textil
del departamento sindical del Partido Socialista, en
Montevideo.<BR> Vino la desocupación. Estuve largos
períodos en el seguro de paro, y luego nos ofrecieron el despido, que al fin
acepté, en el 70 y me alejé de la industria.<BR> Siempre
mantuve la actividad sindical, pero me metí más en la tarea política, en el
Partido Socialista y en el Frente Amplio, que en ese momento se
creaba.<BR> Nunca fui rentada ni en la actividad
sindical ni en la política, tal vez salieron muchos pesos de mi flaco bolsillo
para una lucha con la que me sentía totalmente comprometida, como todos los
militantes sindicales de esos años. Vivía apasionadamente los acontecimientos,
en un aprendizaje permanente. Todos aprendíamos e íbamos modificando nuestra
vida personal en la medida en que empezábamos a participar en la vida
colectiva.<BR> Fueron los mejores años de mi
juventud. </FONT></FONT><FONT size=2 face=Arial><FONT size=2
