size=2><BR> En la mitad de la década del cincuenta,
la crisis muestra su cara más siniestra a los trabajadores del Cerro de
Montevideo.<BR> Después de enriquecerse en nuestro país,
los dueños de los frigoríficos extranjeros amenazan con cerrarlos y marcharse
del país. La lucha de los trabajadores toma las calles del
barrio.<BR> Entre las obreras de los frigoríficos del
Cerro, muy pocas participaban en la militancia sindical, y mucho menos en la
dirección del gremio. Esto sucedía en todos los casos, pero, a su manera, ellas
se incorporaron a la lucha como siempre.<BR> Las
«friyeras», como les decían despectivamente, de aspecto recio y firme, mujeres
de «cuchillo en mano», su herramienta de trabajo, tenían por dentro un corazón
tan grande como sus faldas.<BR> Eran unas luchadoras y
lo demostraron en muchas ocasiones.<BR> Solidaridad y
lealtad para con sus hombres las caracterizaban. Digo «sus hombres» y no hablo
sólo de maridos, padres e hijos, sino también de sus compañeros del gremio,
porque, a pesar de que en 1956 creyeron que solo ellos eran el Sindicato, no
permitiéndoles integrarse a la huelga de hambre a ninguna de ellas, cuando la
situación se puso difícil y no se conmovían los poderes públicos y pasaban los
días sin solución, ellas no dudaron, no se sintieron de otra parte. A las
mujeres les sobró iniciativa, creatividad, combatividad y actuaron
solas.<BR> Marchamos al
Parlamento.<BR> Eramos unas cincuenta entre trabajadoras
del frigorífico, hijas de trabajadores, esposas; otras como yo, solo vecinas del
barrio. Mi padre era obrero portuario y yo obrera textil, pero me sentía parte
de la lucha de las friyeras. Todos éramos obreros y otros compañeros podían
morir en esta huelga de hambre. Defendíamos intereses de la clase
trabajadora.<BR> Se habían roto las
negociaciones.<BR> -¡A las
cuatro!<BR> -¡Sí! Yo
también.<BR> -¡A las cuatro!<BR>
-¡Y no falto!<BR> Son las cuatro de la
tarde.<BR> Con bolsos y niños de la mano, empiezan a
llegar. Piden ser escuchadas por los parlamentarios. Se sientan, esperan, no
tienen apuro, no volverán sin ser escuchadas. Ellas también son el Sindicato y
saben explicarlo muy bien, saben hablar de reivindicaciones porque les son
propias.<BR> -Mucho comunicado de prensa, pero pocas
soluciones para la huelga- dicen a los periodistas.<BR>
Una tarde muy fría, medio centenar de mujeres del Cerro ocupan la explanada del
Palacio Legislativo.<BR> Seguro no es un lindo
espectáculo ese mujererío en la explanada del Palacio. Poco a poco, son rodeadas
por las «Fuerzas del Orden».<BR> -Circulen, aquí no se
pueden quedar.<BR> No responden, no es con ellos con
quienes quieren hablar, no importa la barrera policial. Se les sigue
«exhortando» a irse a sus casas. No escuchan, se vuelven sordas por un momento.
Tranquilas. Con calma de madres, algunas se sientan para darles de mamar a sus
hijos. Creen que sentadas no les podrán pegar.<BR> Se
viene la noche. Poco a poco, de todos los bolsos, sale comida, leche para los
niños. Se trajeron los mates, tortas fritas, vinieron preparadas para pasar la
noche si es necesario.<BR> - Aquí tiene, coma,
compañera, pásele a aquella.<BR> Lo tienen claro: no se
van. De allí no se mueve nadie...<BR> Salen los
parlamentarios y todas a la vez hablan, dialogan, explican, piden, exigen. Los
únicos que se apersonan son Trias, D’Elia, Alba Roballo, Zelmar Michelini,
Enrique Rodríguez, Arismendi, Cardozo y Erro. Ellos vuelven a entrar al Palacio
de las Leyes, prometiendo presentar una moción. Por primera vez me di cuenta de
lo frío y duro que era el mármol... Y tan lindo que se veía desde el ómnibus,
cada día.<BR> Seguimos sentadas en la escalinata,
esperando, esperando. Pasan las horas. Anochece. Hace frío, mucho
frío.<BR> De un lado los parlamentarios, del otro, otras
voces:<BR> -Circulen, vuelvan a sus casas. No les
queremos pegar. Se lo están buscando. Háganlo por sus hijos. No pueden pasar la
noche aquí.<BR> Esas voces no las asustan, están firmes
en sus pretensiones y muy tranquilas.<BR> Los niños se
duermen. Como de la galera de un mago, de los bolsos salen frazadas. Se agrupan
más para abrigarse. No se ha movido nadie, seguimos sentadas en las escalinatas
de mármol. Personas que no conocemos tratan de hacernos llegar paquetes, sin
éxito.<BR> Los milicos se están poniendo nerviosos. Se
agrupa la gente en la acera de enfrente; gritan mensajes, pero no los podemos
oír. Están muy lejos...<BR> Por fin se abre otra vez la
puerta, salen los mismos parlamentarios. Anuncian que se consiguió una Comisión,
que mediará en el conflicto. Una esperanza, nada más, una pequeña
alegría.<BR> Los parlamentarios nos piden que nos
vayamos. Esta Comisión nos ofrece ciertas garantías, por lo menos para poner fin
a la huelga de hambre y para llevar la discusión del cierre de los frigoríficos
al Parlamento y a toda la opinión pública.<BR> Son las
once y media de la noche. Con la alegría de lo conseguido, con los pies y el
culo helados, acompañadas por algunos parlamentarios, abandonamos la escalinata
de mármol, que volvió a quedarse fría y sola.<BR> Con la
bandera uruguaya desplegada, para romper el cerco policial, llegamos al Cerro, a
la Federación de la Carne, a casa, a tomar un plato de sopa
caliente.<BR> Y yo, a las cinco y media de la mañana, a
la fábrica textil donde trabajaba. <BR> Llegaron
friyeros del interior del país.<BR> En esos días, las
mujeres tuvimos que resolver el alojamiento de los compañeros del frigorífico
Anglo de Fray Bentos, que llegaron en una marcha en solidaridad con la huelga. A
ellas las alojamos en nuestras casas; los compañeros se quedaron en la
Federación. Pudimos conocernos y confraternizar.<BR>
También llegaron delegaciones de Paysandú, en mi casa alojamos‚ a compañeras de
allí; hicimos amistad y me escribí con ellas durante algunos años. Cuando más
tarde estuve en su pueblo, las visité‚ y fue muy lindo el reencuentro y recordar
esas luchas callejeras, las historias no contadas.<BR>Una
novia<BR> En esa huelga se perdió mucho más que los dos
quilos de carne que cada obrero tenia diariamente por convenio y el cierre del
frigorífico Swift. Perdimos a Rubén Paleo y a Muñoz, dos compañeros de la
dirección del gremio, que murieron en distintas
circunstancias.<BR> A Muñoz no lo conocía., pero con
Rubén éramos amigos, teníamos largas conversaciones sobre anarquismo y
sindicalismo. Es muy doloroso perder a un amigo repentinamente, cuando no te lo
esperás, cuando queda mucho por hablar todavía.<BR>
Ruben era de la directiva de la Federación de la Carne, y junto con otros
compañeros estaba haciendo la huelga de hambre. Un día lo sacaron con un fuerte
dolor de cabeza y lo internaron. Era meningitis y estaba muy grave. A los cuatro
días murió.<BR> Compartí el dolor de aquella perdida con
su familia, sus compañeros y su novia. Cuando llegué al velorio ella se acercó y
me preguntó:<BR> -¿Vos sos la Negrita? El me hablo de
vos. ¿Vos también lo querías? -y se contestó-: El por todos se hacía
querer.<BR> No pude contestarle, se me anudó la
garganta, solo pude abrazarla fuertemente.<BR> Ella
caminaba y caminaba por toda la sala, nerviosa. Con todos conversaba, preguntaba
y preguntaba, tenía muchos interrogantes y no podía encontrar respuesta a lo que
quería saber. Cuando se despidió ‚ abrazada al cajón, dijo despacito:<BR>- Hasta
pronto amor. Tenían muchos proyectos juntos. Habían comprado los muebles, la
heladera, los platos, el primus, la caldera. Estaban esperando que terminara la
huelga para casarse. Habían sido novios durante seis
años.<BR> Ruben murió el 19 de mayo de 1956, no había
cumplido los 29 años. Ella no lo podía superar, lo recordaba obsesiva, callada,
permanentemente.<BR> Una tarde salió a comprar una cosa
cualquiera y compró otra: veneno para ratas. Para que sus padres, que no la
dejaban sola, no se dieran cuenta, se lo comió en pequeñas dosis, en los
desayunos, untando el pancito con manteca, día a día. Para acortar la distancia.
Porque cuando le dijo: «Hasta pronto», lo dijo de
verdad.<BR> A la semana, cuando se sintió mal, no dijo
nada, y el médico la trató por gripe.<BR> -Siempre fue
muy sana -dijeron las hermanas.<BR> Una semana después
la internaron ya sin fuerzas y confesó que no quería vivir
más.<BR> -Sólo quíteme los dolores, doctor, yo estoy
tranquila, yo estoy preparada.<BR> Se olvidó de ella
porque no se podía olvidarlo. Olvidó que había estudiado contabilidad, comercio,
inglés, para defenderse en la vida. Olvidó que estaba preparada, pero no lo
estaba para esa pérdida. Olvidó para qué servía vivir. Tuvo una muerte cruel,
que no merecía.<BR> Sucedió todo muy rápido. Se fueron
los dos sin despedida de solteros, sin luna de miel. Con ella perdimos una vida
más en esa huelga. Hay que agregarla a la historia no contada, donde se mezcla
lo público y lo privado, lo social y lo particular. Se llamaba Isabel Ledesma y
tenía veintitrés años, murió el 19 de julio de 1956.<BR>
El Cerro, empezaba a vivir la agresión cotidiana. El hambre y la desocupación,
el luto y la tristeza ensombrecieron las luchas sindicales y los rostros de la
gente. Siento que tengo que contar estas historias de mujeres, que son parte de
hechos sociales que viví en mi juventud. Me importa contarlas en su plenitud,
porque cuando no se cuentan y quedan ocultas, se muestra una sola cara de la
Luna, pero la Luna es un todo, la forman luz y sombra. Igual, igual que la
realidad... luz y sombras..</FONT>. </FONT></FONT><FONT size=2
