size=2><BR> La Negra Espronzato, me invita a su
casa a tomar mate. Cuenta que ella nació en Canelones y vino a Montevideo a
trabajar, como tantas muchachas.<BR> -Yo salí de entre
los terrones, a trabajar en lo que fuera, o sea de domestica. Pero tuve la
suerte de que una vecina me avisara que en FUNSA estaban tomando mujeres. Yo no
sabía nada de fábricas, pero me dijo que se ganaba muy bien. Eso me entusiasmó.
Lo malo, me advirtió, era que te tomaban y antes de las cien jornadas te
despedían. Pero la oportunidad no se podía
desaprovechar.<BR> Se presentó en la puerta de la
fábrica y quedó muy impresionada. Era muy grande, no la podía comparar con
ningún galpón que hubiera visto antes. En ese momento una sirena anunciaba la
salida de un turno. Le pareció un hormiguero de tamaño desproporcionado. Todos
caminaban de prisa, hombres y mujeres, vestidos de azul, de “brin sanforizado”.
No sabía a quién preguntar, ni que hacer, se sintió muy
pequeña...<BR> FUNSA era una gran fábrica de manufactura
de caucho. Allí se hacían botas, zapatos de goma,
neumáticos…<BR> Se le acercó una muchachita, flaca,
larga y mal vestida que había estado recostada a la pared, observando el mismo
espectáculo. Le preguntó, casi temblando:<BR> -¿Aquí es
FUNSA?<BR> -Si.<BR> La otra
estaba en la misma que ella: buscando trabajo.<BR> Entre
las dos se las ingeniaron para preguntar y encontrar la puerta de entrada.
Descubrieron el cartel en que una flecha indicaba donde estaba la oficina de
personal. Allí llegaron con una amistad de cinco minutos, que les daba mucha
seguridad.<BR> -Estoy
nerviosa.<BR> -Yo más.<BR> Se
acercaron a una empleada y le preguntaron,
carraspeando:<BR> -¿Aquí toman
gente?<BR> Sacándose los lentes, la empleada contestó
con otra pregunta.<BR> -¿Cuántos años tienen? Se está
apuntando a las mayores de dieciocho. ¿Tienen cedula de
identidad?<BR> -Si -dijo la Negra. Echó mano al bolsillo
y puso su documento sobre el mostrador.<BR> -No contestó
la otra con poca voz y dando un paso hacia atrás.<BR>
-Entonces sácala y vení otro día -dijo, desinteresada, la
empleada.<BR> -No estoy apuntada en el Registro Civil,
mis padres no están casados. Mejor dicho: no estoy reconocida - o dijo casi como
una confesión.<BR> La empleada siguió escribiendo. La
joven dio media vuelta, dispuesta a irse.<BR> -Espérame
un poquito, no te vayas -le pidió la Negra.<BR> Al poco
rato la Negra salió como borracha de alegría:<BR> -¡Me
tomaron!<BR> Afuera la esperaban los ojos húmedos de la
muchacha.<BR> -Mis padres no me apuntaron cuando nací y
no sé cómo lo tengo que hacer.<BR> -No te preocupes.
¿Cómo te llamas?<BR> -Luisa<BR>
-Vamos a preguntar. Tenemos que ir hoy, porque mañana empiezo a trabajar. Vamos.
No podés estar sin documentos en Montevideo.<BR> Luisa
no pudo entrar esa semana, los trámites llevaron varios
días.<BR> -Hacía un calor terrible, ese verano. Entré en
1947, yo era una muchachita. Todo lo nuevo da un poco de miedo, el olor tan
fuerte a caucho, el ruido, la gente que te observa y que todavía no
conocés…<BR> La Negra, sacó un poquito de yerba y
acomodó la bombilla.<BR> -Las nuevas entran y salen
todas juntas, se esperan para darse ánimo. Vos ya sabés -esquivó la mirada y
sonrió-. Aunque no lo creas, yo era tímida.<BR> En 1952
la Negra y Luisa seguían siendo amigas. Hacía cinco años que trabajaban en el
mismo turno. La Negra trajo a una hermana más chica a trabajar a Montevideo, que
entró en PHUASA una fábrica textil y unos meses después, trajo a un hermano que
consiguió entrar en ANCAP.<BR> Los padres, desde
Canelones, les mandaban una vez por semana bolsos con frutas, verduras y
cordero. De esos paquetes algo iba para Luisa, que tenía muchos hermanos. Porque
la huelga del 52, esa fue brava.<BR> No se acuerda mucho
de cómo empezó ella en el Sindicato, pero recuerda que un día, en su turno se
empezó a hablar de sindicato dentro de la fábrica. Nunca había oído nada sobre
eso. Escuchó que había otros gremios que iban a la
huelga.<BR> -En FUNSA había un sindicato «amarillo».
Casi todos eran administrativos, encargados, capataces… Los amarillos no querían
ir a la huelga.<BR> Luisa y la Negra callaban,
escuchaban, pero no estaban ajenas a nada, porque sabían de las injusticias que
se cometían y de las mañas del viejo Pedro Sáenz. Habían visto muchas veces
temblar al capataz cuando el patrón recorría la fabrica; no podían oírlo, pero
se daban cuenta que lo estaba miliqueando, que le pedía “más velocidad, mas
producción, mas control”. El capataz se ponía rojo de vergüenza y la gente se
daba cuenta.<BR> -Así es la cosa, cuando querés acordar,
te despiden y anda a reclamarle a Macucho. Y al capataz igual que a
cualquiera.<BR> No se acuerda, porque todo fue muy
rápido. Los gremios del puerto y el transporte de Montevideo empezaron una
huelga por derechos sindicales para todos, y el gobierno decretó Medidas Prontas
de Seguridad (estado de sitio).<BR> Las Medidas Prontas
de Seguridad, decretadas por el gobierno, permitían al Poder Ejecutivo enviar al
Ejército a sustituir en sus puestos de trabajo a los funcionarios públicos en
huelga.<BR> Esa fue brava. En la fábrica nos decían que
nosotros, en FUNSA, no teníamos nada que ver, que arreglaríamos directo con el
patrón. ¿Y eso qué importa? Si todos los gremios llaman a la huelga porque el
Ejército entró a trabajar en el Puerto nosotros
también.<BR> Me animé y lo dije en la
asamblea.<BR> -Yo no subo a un ómnibus, si lo maneja un
milico- dijo Luisa-. Dice mi padre que el Ejército entra mañana a los tranvías,
que no suba.<BR> En el vestuario, las demás
callaban.<BR> -Dicen que hay que apedrearlos -agregó
Luisa-, y yo tengo flor de puntería.<BR> Todas rieron,
cómplices.<BR> A la mañana siguiente, en la calle,
camiones de milicos por todas partes. Vigilaban la ciudad, cerraban los locales
sindicales y en la puerta dejaban un milico vigilando que no entrara nadie. Los
sindicalistas pasaban a la clandestinidad; se refugiaban en casas de familiares
o de otros compañeros, pero seguían reuniéndose.<BR>
ANCAP ocupado, también, por el Ejército.<BR> La Negra
era la mayor de los hermanos, la jefa de hogar con veintitrés años. No se
acostaba hasta que llegaran todos, por la noche. En casa de la Negra se sabía lo
que pasaba en tres sindicatos, los tres hermanos trabajaban en distintas
lugares: FUNSA, textiles y ANCAP. De a poco se iban integrando, aunque no
supieran mucho de sindicatos.<BR> A veces comía sola,
nerviosa, esperando que llegaran.<BR> -No me pasaba la
comida.<BR> Cada vez tenía menos para poner a la olla:
todos los integrantes de la casa en huelga...<BR>
-Miedo, pero más rabia… Cuando llegaba Luisa, las dos salíamos a la calle a ver
qué pasaba. Si cuadraba, apedreábamos algún ómnibus manejado por
carneros.<BR> En los diarios, FUNSA, convocaba a los
trabajadores, diciendo que el que no se presentara al otro día se podía
considerar despedido. Les enviaban telegramas
colacionados.<BR> -Angustia, miedo, rabia, pero
carnerear ¡nunca!<BR> -De a poco las cosas fueron
cambiando y ahora nosotras también empezamos a cuidar en las esquinas, que no
entraran a carnerear a la fábrica. Se puso muy difícil, el Ejército puso
camiones en las dos esquinas de FUNSA. Entraron los capataces y algunas
empleadas. Les gritábamos “carneros” y “bee, bee”... Algunas veces nos corrieron
los milicos y nos tuvimos que esconder en casas que, como al descuido, dejaban
la puerta sin pasador. Los vecinos nos apoyaban. Teníamos algunos compañeros de
base presos.<BR> -Le dije a Luisa que estaba con mucha
bronca y que ahora tenía yo también buena puntería con las piedras y nos
empezamos a reír como si fuera una travesura.<BR> Luisa,
después que tuvo la cédula de identidad, dijo que se sentía persona. Se
interesaba por los derechos que tienen los trabajadores. A la Negra no le
gustaba la injusticia. Hicieron un piquete solitas, ellas dos. Sin saber mucho
de política, se empezaron a decir socialistas, como el compañero Irmo
Bidegaray.<BR> -No sabíamos dónde se reunía el
Sindicato. Preguntando, preguntando, llegamos a donde se cocinaba; era la olla
sindical. Allí conocimos hombres y mujeres de otros sindicatos. Nos reuníamos
lejos, a veces en el Cerro con los de la Federación de la Carne y
escuchábamos.<BR> Lo que sucedía en todo Montevideo era
más de lo que imaginaban. Ya eran los últimos días de la huelga general, se
negociaban soluciones, hasta con el Ministro de
Trabajo.<BR> -Fueron luchas por salario y mucho más.
Movimientos callejeros, se ocupaban las fábricas, caravanas por la ciudad en
camiones, mujeres y hombres en camiones recorriendo los barrios hasta el Palacio
Legislativo y allí llegaban otros gremios. Las mujeres también subíamos a los
camiones, nos encontrábamos con ustedes, las textiles, saludábamos con las
banderas del Sindicato, acampábamos frente al Palacio… Y la persecución también,
compañeros presos por varios días en cada salida…<BR>
-Un día ocupamos FUNSA. Comunicamos: «Huelga de brazos
caídos».<BR> Don Pedro Sáenz, que era un déspota, no
quería venir a hablar con los trabajadores. Nosotros pusimos la fábrica en
marcha nuevamente. Le dijimos que ahora la fábrica era nuestra. ¡Ay
juna!<BR> Cuando los de la oficina lo llamaron para
darles nuestra respuesta y vio que salía humo por las chimeneas, llegaron tres
autos con los del directorio, sí, vinieron a interesarse por lo que
pasaba.<BR> Las cosas las conseguíamos sólo así: por la
fuerza de los trabajadores.<BR> Cuando terminó la huelga
y entraron a trabajar en su turno, Luisa y la Negra se dieron cuenta de que
ellas eran distintas, estaban más atentas a los comentarios, a lo que pasaba
dentro de la fábrica.<BR> -Nosotras dos, éramos las
únicas de las nuevas que nos entreverábamos con los del
gremio.<BR> Así supieron que en la fábrica se buscaba
formar un sindicato autónomo y fueron las dos primeras mujeres que trabajaron en
esa primera comisión buscando adherentes. Era casi secreta porque allí antes
solo había “sindicato amarillo”. La Negra y Luisa eran aparadoras, buenas
trabajadoras, cumplidoras: eran respetadas.<BR> -No
queríamos ni sindicato rojo, ni amarillo, queríamos que fuera de los
trabajadores.de FUNSA.<BR> -Fue así que nos hicimos del
Sindicato.<BR> -¿En aquella época, las mujeres tampoco
sobresalían en el sindicato?<BR> -No teníamos interés en
sobresalir. Eran tiempos distintos, algunas de nosotras no sabía leer ni
escribir. Muchas mujeres de FUNSA éramos del interior del país algunas tenían
miedo de perder el trabajo, pero apoyaban al Sindicato, aunque no querían
aparecer públicamente.<BR> Había compañeras de Artigas,
Rivera, Melo, de muy lejos. Venían a Montevideo solas, con una recomendación de
un club colorado o blanco, y sin conocer a nadie. En Montevideo se metían a
vivir en una fonda y si no llegaban a entregar la carta en la fábrica porque les
daba miedo, se empleaban con cama en una casa de familia y allí se hundían
trabajando.<BR> Había mucho trabajo en esa época y
también mucha lucha sindical en la calle. Durante la huelga las mujeres
trabajamos mucho, vendíamos bonos, conseguíamos mucho apoyo en otros gremios,
pedíamos en la feria y en el mercado fruta y verdura, llevábamos las finanzas y
ayudábamos en la olla sindical. No era nada nuevo, igual que ustedes. También,
hablábamos en las asambleas pero éramos las menos.<BR>
Esa, la huelga grande del 52, es la que más
recuerdo.<BR> La Negra Espronzato me alcanza el
mate.<BR> -Eran otros
tiempos.<BR> Queda pensativa. Se
ríe.<BR> -Una vez entró la policía al local del
Sindicato. Pusieron todo patas arriba, pero el dinero del Sindicato lo salvamos,
porque a una compañera, que andaba con su tejido de arriba para abajo, se le
ocurrió ovillar lana alrededor del rollo de billetes. Y así pasó el dinero, como
una madeja más en el bolso, junto a las agujas y al buzo que
tejía.<BR> Los años 50… Ahora es diferente. Yo hablaba
poco en las asambleas, era más de hacer... no de hablar, ni de
escribir.<BR> -Hablaba cuando me ponía furiosa, cuando
me calentaba. No aguanto las injusticias. Era cuando hablaba, porque no podía
con mi genio.<BR> Nos despedimos con un fuerte abrazo.
Teníamos muchas cosas en común: el mismo patrón, la misma
