size=2><BR> Trabajar y vivir como las mujeres
recolectoras de tomates en las quintas de Bella Unión, en Artigas, es algo muy
duro, inhumano.<BR> UTAA no se limitó a agrupar a los
trabajadores cañeros. Obreros de distintas ramas del trabajo agrícola, se fueron
agrupando alrededor del Sindicato. Trajeron nuevos reclamos y denunciaron sus
malas condiciones de trabajo.<BR> Las obreras de las
chacras tomateras se acercaron a UTAA.<BR> Querían
«estar en caja», para cobrar la asignación familiar por sus hijos y poder
jubilarse algún día. Querían que las respetasen, que no las trataran a
gritos.<BR> -No somos
perros.<BR> ¿Cómo las conocí?
¿Cuándo?<BR> Corría el año, mil novecientos sesenta y
tres, a fines de noviembre y principios de
diciembre.<BR> Dos fines de semana llegué a Bella Unión
con Andrés Cultelli. Atendíamos sábado de tarde y domingo por la mañana.
Enseguida empezaba a llegar gente.<BR> Andrés como
asesor jurídico del sindicato recogía los datos de los casos de reclamos legales
que se presentaban en UTAA: despidos, diferencias de salarios, acusaciones de
abigeato etc.<BR> Las entrevistas jurídicas eran charlas
acompañadas con mate, fuera de toda formalidad. Comíamos allí mismo, lo que los
compañeros nos traían de sus casas.<BR> Yo iba ayudar en
lo que fuera útil. Escuchaba a la gente que traía distintas
preocupaciones.<BR> En rueda de mujeres, hablábamos de
salud. Oí a muchas hablar de abortos, de embarazos no deseados, del riesgo de
vida que acarrean las prácticas abortivas ilegales que se practican en nuestro
país y también cruzando la frontera, de la automedicación y la desinformación
que todas padecemos.<BR> Eran los mismos temas de los
que hablábamos las mujeres de las fábricas textiles. Eran las mismas
preocupaciones de nosotras, las obreras
montevideanas.<BR> Les llevé la invitación para el
Primer Encuentro de Mujeres Trabajadoras, que se preparaba en Montevideo para
fines de diciembre. En esa convocatoria estaban trabajando Delia Maldonado y
Jorgelina Martinez, dos compañeras textiles. Ellas me pidieron que hablara del
Encuentro a las mujeres de UTAA.<BR> Días después, las
mujeres de UTAA eligieron a Hilda Silva y a Isabel Gómez, para representarlas.
Ellas explicaron las condiciones de vida y de trabajo en Bella Unión. Por
primera vez escuchamos la consigna TIERRA PARA QUIEN LA TRABAJA, traída por
estas compañeras al Encuentro Nacional de Mujeres
Trabajadoras.<BR> Esos fines de semana aprendí mucho en
el intercambio.<BR> Andrés se iba por la noche a alguna
reunión en el pueblo, en la que yo no participaba.<BR>
-Eso es cosa de hombres -decían ellas.<BR> -Quédate con
nosotras.<BR> Y me quedaba en el barrio, compartiendo
algún pan casero recién hecho.<BR> Me invitaban a dormir
a su casa. Conocí sus familias, su forma de vivir, sus ranchos y el olor a leña
de sus hogares, que me llevaba a mi casa, para recordarlas durante la
semana.<BR> En el sindicato era diaria la rueda de mate.
A veces traían buñuelos o tortas fritas. Relataban distintos casos. Contaron
tantas cosas, que se llegó a pedir una inspección sanitaria que nunca se
realizó.<BR> Los patrones abusaban del uso de
insecticidas, venenos con los que sulfataban las plantas. A las obreras les
provocaba alergia en manos y ojos, vómitos y erupciones en todo el cuerpo.
Terminaban en la consulta, en el hospital y tenían que dejar de
trabajar.<BR> Durante los días de cosecha bajo el sol,
el calor era aplastante, de treinta a treinta y ocho grados durante las ocho o
diez horas de trabajo a destajo.<BR> La zafra era
esperada con alegría y angustia a la vez. Tenían que ser muy rápidas,
explicaban, porque los tomates maduran todos a la vez y en tres o cuatro días se
puede perder una cosecha. Debían apurarse porque solo tienen esos días para
hacer su salario. El tomate es delicado, no lo podés machucar ni arrancar de
cualquier manera. Lleva su tiempo y pagan muy mal.<BR>
Algunas mujeres tenían que llevar a la quinta a sus hijos chiquitos. Los
acostaban en los surcos, cerca de ellas, envueltos en unos trapos, tapándolos
con ramitas verdes para que estuvieran fresquitos mientras
dormían.<BR> Tenían que cuidarlos de los insectos que
allí abundan, por el clima.<BR> Me decían que alguna
había parido a sus hijos en los surcos de tierra:<BR>
-Cuando sos de parto rápido y levantas un cajón podés romper agua y atrás viene
el gurí, sin avisar –contaba una, con toda
naturalidad.<BR> Yo, como montevideana, estaba lejos de
imaginar que en el Uruguay al que llamaban «la Suiza de América», pasaran estas
cosas.<BR> Jacinta tendría unos cuarenta y cinco años,
supongo, aunque algunas veces me equivoqué al calcular edades. Siempre parecen
mayores, llenas de hijos, desgastadas por el trabajo y la
vida.<BR> La vi por primera vez una tarde, cuando la
trajo otra zafrera al ranchito del Sindicato.<BR> Nos
dijeron que el caso de Jacinta era urgente. Traía un papelito de pase a cirugía
del hospital local para el Hospital de Clínicas. Tenía que viajar a Montevideo
para operarse aquel enorme bocio, que señaló con la mano, aunque no era
necesario; se veía que era del tamaño de un huevo de avestruz y le colgaba.
Jacinta tenía grandes ojos saltones y enrojecidos por la enfermedad
avanzada.<BR> Nos pedían que le solucionáramos el viaje,
alojamiento y acompañamiento al Hospital de Clínicas. Yo traté de explicarles
que eso teníamos que tramitarlo con el sindicato de ONDA, que era la única
empresa de ómnibus que viajaba hasta Artigas.<BR> Así lo
hice: recogí sus datos personales y el pase médico. Después de una semana
conseguí su pasaje de ida y vuelta a la Capital y se lo
envié.<BR> Una tarde, me avisaron que Jacinta estaba en
Casa del Pueblo, esperándome.<BR> Cuando llegué me
sorprendí: no estaba sola. En sus brazos sostenía una niña que padecía parálisis
cerebral e hidrocefalia, según supe después.<BR> Piernas
y brazos largos, finos y descarnados, manos y pies grandes, que colgaban como
trapos, y una cabeza grande, frente ancha, ojos mirando hacia atrás sin ver y
una boca babeante.<BR> Jacinta sólo me dijo, a modo de
saludo:<BR> -No tenía con quien
dejarla.<BR> Yo no sabía que traería a esta hijita y
tampoco sabía qué hacer. Sólo tenía previsto el alojamiento para ella y la
visita al médico que la atendería en el Hospital de Clínicas. ¿Qué hacer? ¡Qué
ganas de llorar! Cuando hablo de alojamiento no hablo de hotel: era la casa de
alguno de nosotros, no teníamos plata para otra
cosa.<BR> La presencia de la niña lo cambiaba todo.
Pensaba alojar a Jacinta en otra casa, cerca del Hospital, pero todo cambió,
porque la niña necesitaba cuidados especiales. Eran las ocho de la noche, y
pensé en mi madre. No le había comentado en que andaba, pero suponía que mi
madre no me dejaría en la estacada.<BR> Llegué a casa a
cenar sin avisar, como tantas veces, acompañada por Jacinta, su hijita y un nudo
en la garganta. Miré la cara de mi madre durante la cena para ver su reacción.
En seguida supe que se podían quedar las dos en casa. Doña Rosa me hizo
comprender que ella cuidaría de la niña. Yo sabía que mi madre tenía un gran
corazón solidario.<BR> ¡Qué tranquilidad! A la mañana
siguiente iría a la fábrica sabiendo que la niña quedaba en buenas manos y que
otra compañera llevaría a Jacinta al hospital.<BR>
Cuando operaron a Jacinta nos quedamos con la niña en casa. Mi madre la trataba
con cariño y le preparaba sopas nutritivas, papillas y
frutas.<BR> Le daba mucho de comer porque la veía muy
flaquita. La niña respondía con risas nerviosas; a veces apretaba la cuchara
entre los dientes y era difícil sacársela. Respondía también al estímulo de las
palabras cariñosas de doña Rosa. A los tres o cuatro días empezó a hacer un poco
de fiebre, después temperaturas más altas y convulsiones, lo cual nos asustó
mucho.<BR> -Es un angelito de Dios -decía mi madre-.
¿Extrañará?<BR> Llamamos a Isabel, la pediatra, esposa
del compañero José Pedro Cardoso.<BR> Al ver a la niña,
le dijo a mi madre que no le diera tanto de comer, que la niña estaba desnutrida
y padecía raquitismo. Tenía cinco años y pesaba diecisiete quilos y tenía un
sistema digestivo diferente al de un niño de su edad. Nos explicó que, aunque
tuviera siete años, era como un bebé‚ y no aguantaría el cambio de alimentación,
ya que la madre sólo le daba leche o agua con azúcar en mamaderas y muy poco
sólido.<BR> Seguía haciendo fiebre por las tardes y no
movilizaba el intestino.<BR> Otra vez llamamos a la
médica; vio que se estaba poniendo grave. La internaron en el Hospital de Niños.
Teníamos a la madre y a la hija en distintos hospitales. A los pocos días murió
la pequeña, de una parálisis intestinal.<BR> En mi casa
se vivió una jornada de duelo. No podíamos conformar a mi madre. Aunque Jacinta
le había explicado, en conversaciones anteriores, que los médicos le habían
dicho que la niña no pasaría de los cinco años, mi madre no podía aceptar que la
comida le hubiera hecho mal.<BR> -¡Si yo la preparaba
con tanto cariño! -decía.<BR> La velamos en casa de
Andrés. Fue muy triste todo, había muy poquitas personas. Jacinta no hablaba, no
conocía a nadie, sólo miraba y agradecía.<BR> Se quedó
unas semanas en casa de Andrés, recuperándose. Jacinta volvió al pueblo, operada
y sin su hija.<BR> A veces pienso en Jacinta. La imagino
trabajando cada día, con aquella niña que «no tenía con quien dejar», envuelta
en trapitos, a su costado, en los surcos.<BR> La salud
es uno de los derechos irrenunciables de las mujeres trabajadoras, todo lo que
ponga en peligro este derecho se debe denunciar. Es un tema de todos; está en
nuestra vida cotidiana y debe estar en los espacios
sindicales.<BR> Vivir dignamente para una trabajadora no
es solamente tener un salario decente, es también tener acceso al cuidado de su
salud. Era una necesidad de antes y de ahora.<BR> No es
por casualidad que desde su fundación UTAA luchara por tener una policlínica en
Bella Unión, al lado del Sindicato, integrada como parte de la organización.
Ellos supieron verlo desde el principio</FONT>. </FONT></FONT><FONT size=2
