face=Arial> A Doña Eva la conocí en la marcha de
los cañeros. Facciones aindiadas, tez blanca, cabello castaño y ojos verdes.
Tenía en ese momento cinco hijos. No hablaba casi nada, siempre con la cabeza
gacha. Con los extraños hacía poca amistad; era difícil hablar con ella. Para
contestar, miraba al marido como esperando su aprobación: «¿No,
viejito?».<BR> Pero lo que más me impresionó de aquella
mujer, fue la dulzura con que trataba a sus hijos. Con acento fronterizo en la
voz, melosa como el azúcar, les hablaba, jugaba y reía continuamente con ellos.
Era un juego de piel, besos, caricias; y a veces, palmaditas. Por primera vez vi
“dar la teta” con mutuo placer de intercambio. No tenía nada. Vivía en una carpa
con su compañero y sus hijos, pero ella disfrutaba ese momento, con los suyos,
prescindiendo del entorno. No se quejaba ni pedía nada para
ella.<BR> Estaba en la marcha de los cañeros acompañando
a su marido. Aquí, haciendo, igual que allá, la tarea de todos los días, con un
fueguito en el suelo, en cuclillas, igual que allá. Aquí la carpa de tela que
les prestaron; allá el ranchito de paja y terrón en la tierra del patrón, frente
al río.<BR> Recordó su rancho cerquita del río. Los
patos salvajes y algún carpincho engordaban la mesa a veces. El cañaveral, tan
verde y el sonido de la caña al viento en las
tardecitas.<BR> Quiso recordar. Su marido llegaba de la
caña, tan negro, lleno de hollín, sólo le blanqueaban los ojos y los
dientes…<BR> Pero no pudo seguir porque se le boleó la
olla y se le apagaba el fuego. ¡Y ella recordando verdes!
¡Bobadas!<BR> Años después la reencontré en La
Coronilla.<BR> Los tiempos estaban cambiando. Los
primeros presos gremiales y políticos, los primeros estudiantes asesinados en
las calles de Montevideo.<BR> A nosotros nos habían
prestado un rancho. Nos dijeron que doña Eva estaba allí, con sus hijos. No fue
difícil encontrarlos; en ese entonces había unos diez ranchos en el pesquero y
todas las familias se conocían.<BR> Fue muy lindo volver
a verlos. Los niños y ella estaban espléndidos, negritos, les blanqueaban los
dientes, curtida la piel del aire salado. Estaban tan felices de vernos como
nosotros a ellos. Eva estaba más gordita, siempre con la falda larga, el pelo
recogido en la nuca, más claro por el sol. Sus ojos tenían un nuevo brillo, se
la notaba feliz, tranquila.<BR> -Estábamos pasando mal
en Montevideo después del desparramo de los peludos. Unos fueron para Artigas,
otros para Treinta y Tres y nosotros terminamos
aquí.<BR> -Nos trajo el Bebe -dijo su compañero-. Aquí
salgo a la pesca, tenemos unos conejos en la isla, hijos de los que largamos
allí con el Bebe, y vivimos, no más. Pero el aire es más sano para la
gurisada.<BR> El compañero de Eva se crió en Artigas
trabajando la tierra, muy lejos del mar. Ahora es pescador, aunque le tiene
terror al mar.<BR> Es el trabajo que hacen los hombres
aquí. No es fácil el cambio de cañero a pescador, es como ir del azúcar a la
sal, pero él sigue igual, de buen carácter, dicharachero, con ojos de picardía,
siempre sonriente.<BR> El pesquero está rodeado de
médanos calientes. Más allá el océano Atlántico, bravío, salado, profundo y
frío.<BR> Lo difícil es el invierno y el carácter de la
gente del pesquero. Él venía de un trabajo colectivo y le resultaba difícil el
trabajo aislado.<BR> -El carácter de la gente es
distinto. Es otro clima, tuvimos que adaptarnos a su modo de ser,
silencioso.<BR> Ellos dos se juntaron en el azúcar y en
la sal, en las alegrías y en las tristezas. Él creció sin padre y ella se quedó
con el padre y una mujer que no era su mamá; la suya se había ido y no le
permitieron verla más. Dos infancias de soledad los
unían.<BR> La década del setenta, como a muchas
familias, los golpeó. Cuando vinieron a buscar a su marido, ella quedó sola con
los hijos, rodeada de arena y mar. Siete largos años, sola. Fue difícil, muy
difícil para ella empezar de nuevo y sin él.<BR>
-Desaparecieron los vecinos, no llegaba nadie por el rancho. Pasaban de largo,
sólo una o dos vecinas llegaban. Fue como si estuviéramos apestados. Quedamos
solos los hijos y yo en este rancho.<BR> En el pesquero
de La Coronilla no hay trabajo para mujeres solas. Algunas van a arrancar
mejillones y berberechos al Cerro Verde para vender en los hoteles. Las que
tienen su hombre que sale al mar, salan el pescado que ellos traen, para
preparar el bacalao.<BR> Eva en ese entonces ya tenía
seis hijos. El mayor empezó a salir en las barcas al mar, tenía 14 años,
trabajaba para otro, pero no alcanzaba el dinero, y Eva le tenía tanto miedo al
mar. Pero ahora estaba sola y tenía que salir adelante. Y los vecinos pasaban de
largo por su rancho porque su marido estaba preso por
tupa.<BR> -Era como estar
apestada.<BR> Un día se armó de coraje y le dijo a una
vecina:<BR> -Mañana, ¿puedo ir con usted a juntar
mejillones? Usted me enseña, ¿no, vecina? Porque yo nunca lo hice, pero no será
difícil, lo único... el mar.<BR> Nos contaba, tomando
mate y mirando lejos:<BR> -“Los mejillones se arrancan
en la madrugada. Hay que levantarse a las cinco de la mañana, aprovechar la
bajante, porque después sube la marea y no podés adentrarte en la roca. Está
oscuro, el cielo y el mar, todo negro, y el ruido de las olas te parece más
fuerte todavía. Pero ésa es la hora. Yo le tengo mucho miedo al mar, pero tenía
que ser fuerte. Tenía que poder, para conseguir la
comida.<BR> Arrancábamos los mejillones de la roca con
una especie de uña. Eso sí, no te podés descuidar, yo no sé nadar y cuando viene
con fuerza el mar, podés perder la estabilidad y te lleva... Mi vecina era más
baquiana que yo y me cuidaba. Cuando venía una ola y me llevaba, ella me traía,
aunque fuera de las patas. Otra vez sobre las
rocas...<BR> Yo aprendí y arrancaba rapidito antes que
viniera la otra ola más fuerte. Da tiempo, es como un ritmo, un vaivén, vienen
dos olas cortas y una más larga y más fuerte. No me podía distraer, estaba
atenta y la esperaba agarrada de la roca con las dos manos, para que no me
llevara.<BR> Así pasé cuatro años metida en el agua,
mojada de pies a cabeza en el agua salada. Se me dormían las piernas, se me
acalambraban. Me latía fuerte el corazón. El mar te da miedo y te atrae a la
vez, te sentís parte de él.<BR> A veces pensaba qué vida
distinta llevaba ahora, tan lejos del campo, del río, de los teros. Me acordaba
de mi gallinero, de mi quinta, del río, cuando con mi viejito íbamos a pescar en
agua dulce. ¡Qué agua tan distinta!<BR> Pero, sobre todo
me acordaba de mis plantitas, mis verduras, mis
flores.<BR> Aquí sentía la arena caliente, pero por las
mañanas y las tardecitas estaba fría. Se me ocurrió
intentarlo.<BR> Empecé a probar a plantar en la arena
algunas muditas de plantas. A mediodía las tapaba con la ropa recién lavada para
protegerlas del sol y empezaron a crecer muy despacito. Acarreábamos abono de
caballo, resaca del mar y algunas tierritas de más lejos que traíamos con mis
hijos para mezclar con la arena y así fui armando esa quintita de a
poquito.<BR> ¡Que nos dio de comer!, ¡qué alegría!
Llegué hasta a vender verdura para comprar aceite y queroseno. Cosechamos habas,
papas, tomates, choclos, arvejas, lechugas, ¡hermosas lechugas! La teníamos
cercada con cañas por los animales que andaban sueltos por la noche, ocupaba
todo el costado del rancho. ¡Sí que nos dio de comer esta
quintita!<BR> ¡Qué trabajo! Venía de arrancar
mejillones, lejos, como a tres quilómetros, del Cerro Verde, con los mejillones
a la espalda. Descansaba un poquito y los llevaba a vender al hotel, otros cinco
quilómetros entre ida y vuelta, por la arena. Como a las once volvía, tomaba
mate cocido y me metía en la quinta a regarla con agua de la cachimba, a
limpiarla, a arrancar yuyos malos. Ponía la comida al fuego, después dormía un
poquito y cuando quería acordar llegaban los gurises de la escuela. Iban a la
escuela rural, de diez de la mañana a tres de la tarde. Los veía llegar desde
lejos, alegres con las bolsitas de tierra que me traían para la
quinta.<BR> Empezaba otra vez: lavar la ropa que traían
sucia para que estuviera pronta al día siguiente, hacer la cena, para estar
adentro del rancho con la puerta cerrada a eso de las seis de la tarde, porque
ya no salíamos más, traíamos los baldes de agua para adentro y nos
trancábamos.<BR> Con toda esa gurisada, saltando,
corriendo y llorando a la vez, yo escuchaba la radio, una chiquita a pilas que
tenía. Los más chiquitos, después de cenar se iban durmiendo. Yo quedaba con los
más grandes escuchando música, informativos y charlando. A veces nos reíamos de
cualquier cosa.<BR> Apagaba el farol y dormíamos con el
ruido del agua tan cerca o con el silbido del viento que sopla mucho aquí. Al
poco rato, ya eran las cuatro de la mañana y me tenía que ir al Cerro Verde a
arrancar mejillones, otra vez. Todos quedaban durmiendo, solitos. La más grande
los levantaba, los preparaba y se iban a la escuela. Así, así, todos los días
así.<BR> Cuando mi viejito estaba preso, yo trabajé con
las otras mujeres en lo único que podía hacer, juntar mejillones y caminar todos
esos quilómetros para venderlos. Aprendí a caminar ligerito como ellas, a la par
de ellas y a cargar la bolsa hasta con 50 kilos. ¡Qué no haría uno por los
hijos! ¿No? Aprendí a comprar y a vender y ellos también me ayudaban. Salimos
todos juntos adelante.<BR> Cuando trabajé esos años con
ellas, una de las vecinas me ayudó a pedir la asignación familiar en Castillos,
porque no alcanzaba la plata y lo pasábamos mal.<BR>
Muchas veces, me acuerdo cuando los hijos me pedían pan de noche y no había.
Entonces les prometí una cosa: “Si llego a sacar la asignación familiar, cada
vez que vaya a cobrar les traeré un pan para cada uno”, y así lo hice. Cada vez
que iba a cobrar a Castillos, traía un pan para cada uno. Me parece verlos
-cuenta entre risas y lágrimas-, les daba un pan y lo comían todo, sentados
abajo de un árbol que yo había plantado. Que comieran cuanto quisieran, les
decía y reían con lágrimas y cuidaban y guardaban sus pedacitos para comer
después.<BR> ¡Eramos felices con tan poquito! ¡De tan
poquito nos reíamos! Los recuerdo cuando por la arena, mis negritos, riendo a
carcajadas, me iban a alcanzar, con la pata en el suelo. Vivíamos muy unidos,
igual que ahora. Mis hijos aunque eran pequeños, me ayudaban a
vivir.<BR> A mi viejito lo podía ir a ver al Penal de
Libertad, de tanto en tanto. Salía muy caro el pasaje desde Rocha a Montevideo.
Esa noche dormía sentada en la agencia de la O.N.D.A. A la mañana viajaba al
Penal.<BR> Después vinieron días peores, no podíamos
arrancar más los mejillones porque vino una especie de enfermedad, se murieron
los que había y las nuevas colonias demoraron en formarse. Yo lo que sé, es que
me quedé sin trabajo.<BR> Eso significaba hambre otra
vez para nosotros. Con una vecina y sus hijos emigramos a Punta del Diablo,
porque nos enteramos que allí había movimiento de turistas. Se podía trabajar en
algunas cosas más. En un ranchito de una pieza nos metimos todos, y empezamos a
trabajar de nuevo.<BR> Mis hijos ya estaban más grandes
