Dear all,
in terms of tickets, visas, and other costs, ICAE and other organisations are asking the Brazilian government to issue an official letter asking airlines and others to contemplate the situation. We are asking everyone therefore to wait until this letter is issued. We also think that once Brazil decides the new date and we have the letter, it will be easier to negotiate with the travel agents. We are also hoping that Brazil will accept the visas that were granted now later in the year. So please wait and do not change your tickets until all this is clarified.
In terms of the call, let´s agree on having it next week. We will be talking with Rosa later today and we will send a message later.

Dear all,
yesterday we received the information that the Brazilian government has postponed CONFINTEA. I copy below the message prepared by ICAE so you can read more about this. But I think we need to have a conference call as soon as possible to see how me move from here, as we were going to meet in Belem for the economic literacy workshop and now this will not take place probably till the end of the year (if the Brazilian government confirms a new date).
Rosa, do you think you can organise a call this week? I look forward to all your comments to see how we move from here, as the meeting in Belem was covering several of our plans for the year. We have to reorganise ourselves. I look forward to all your comments.

Below is the message from ICAE (in Spanish and in English):
Dear friends,
As some of you might have heard, there is information –not official for the time being- that the Brazilian government has decided to postpone CONFINTEA VI due to the Swine flu. We are waiting for the official communication, but for the time being we would like to invite you all not to take any measures with respect to cancellation of tickets. The postponement has enormous consequences to us all, individuals, organisations, NGOs, UN, etc. not just from a financial point of view but in various fronts. Particularly as we do not know yet the date to which the conference was postponed. In light of this ICAE is committed to work as closely as possible with the Brazilian government and UNESCO to ensure that they issue an official statement, addressed to Airlines and other travel agencies, so as to minimize the losses for postponement of travel dates and other associated costs. We also want to ensure that a date is agreed upon for when the Conference is being postponed. Civil society and governments have put great efforts in the preparation of this event throughout the last years. We expect that the official communication will state clearly the political will to hold CONFINTEA VI in 2009 and provides the specific dates for which it is being postponed. We suggest then to all of you to wait for the official communication so you can proceed to change your tickets, and hopefully, with an official letter, this postponement will have minimum costs to all of us.

Como muchas y muchos de ustedes seguramente ya sabrán, ha circulado la información –no oficial por el momento- que el gobierno brasileño ha decidido postergar CONFINTEA VI debido a la gripe porcina. Estamos esperando la comunicación oficial, pero quisiéramos decirles que no tomen por ahora ninguna medida respecto a cancelación de vuelos. La postergación de CONFINTEA VI tiene enormes consecuencias para todos y todas, ya sea para las personas individualmente, las organizaciones, la ONU, etc, no sólo desde un punto de vista financiero sino en varios frentes, sobre todo porque aún no sabemos la fecha para la cual la conferencia ha sido pospuesta. Frente a esta situación ICAE asume el compromiso de trabajar lo más cerca posible con el gobierno brasileño y con UNESCO a los efectos de que den a conocer un comunicado oficial, dirigido a las aerolíneas y agencias de viaje, de manera de minimizar los costos por cambios de fecha de vuelos y otros asociados. También queremos asegurar que se fije una fecha en la que la conferencia tendrá lugar. La sociedad civil y los gobiernos han puesto enormes esfuerzos durante los últimos años para la preparación de la Conferencia. Esperamos que el comunicado oficial plantee expresamente la voluntad política de realizar la CONFINTEA VI en el 2009 y de a conocer la fecha exacta de su realización. Les sugerimos por lo tanto que esperen a la comunicación oficial para cambiar sus pasajes y confiamos que, al contar con una carta oficial, la postergación conlleve costos mínimos para todos y todas nosotras.
