Dear Ana and Fionuala,
This came too late, otherwise i would have love to participate in this symposia. Maternal mortality rate in Nigeria is increasing on a daily basis. in our organization we have lost close to 5 women given birth this year, the sad news is that the mother dies living the child, just last week one woman died in my community during child birth of ceasarian, the baby is alive, presently Mrs. Joseph is caring for twins from two weeks old. I think its really an issue. We have been campaigning for safe motherhood but there is still a lot to be done especially at rural level.

Hi Ana,

Are there groups in the FTF working on maternal health issues that you
think would be interested in particpating in this symposium in September?
Sounds like it would be an interesting opportunity to raise awareness in a
sector with little knowledge of the issues.

A good way of getting travel costs to the GCAP Global Assembly covered as
well!

Thanks,

Fionuala

health to attend WRA symposium in September

Dear
WRA members,

The
WRA Global Secretariat has announced a call to all National Alliances to
nominate up to three exceptional, dynamic young female champions of maternal
health to participate in a competition to attend the White Ribbon Alliance
symposium on September 20, 2010 in New York City.

The
symposium will be held during the week of the Clinton Global Initiative's Annual
Meeting (September 21-23) and the United Nations' summit on assessing the
progress of the Millennium Development Goals (September 20-22). At the United
Nations General Assembly maternal and child health will be front-and-center
thanks to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Joint Action Plan announced in June
2010.The Secretary-General is seeking commitments from all sectors to provide
greater financial resources, make maternal and child health a cornerstone of
foreign policy and international development agendas, and improve the delivery
of health care services to those communities and countries most in
need.

The
WRA symposium aims not only to address those issues but also to celebrate the
next generation of maternal and child health advocates and highlight our guiding
principle that people from all walks of life can contribute in their own way to
the global effort to put an end to needless deaths from pregnancy and
childbirth. (Note, the symposium audience is almost entirely
U.S.-based.)

The
nominee must be 30 years or below of age. The nominee has to submit a three to
five minute long filmed speech discussing their views and feelings on maternal
health in their country that addresses an audience of leading New York women who
are not familiar with the particular health issues facing women in that
country.

The
videos may be submitted in the nominees' language of choice, but a written
translation must be provided. We also require an information form for all of the
nominees and have provided guidelines for formatting the video and a consent
form for the WRA to use their short film. These additional forms must be
submitted with the nominee's video in order for them to be eligible for
selection. The selected participants will be staying in New York City from
September 16th - 22nd (approximate dates) and must possess a working knowledge
of English.

All
nomination materials must be submitted electronically to the WRA India by July
18, 2010 at nmittal en cedpaindia.org. The nominations will be screened by a
small group and three nominations will be sent to WRA Global secretariat for
final selection.

The
selected participants will be notified. No extension will be granted under any
circumstances due to the timeline for visas and other arrangements.
Materials received after July 18, 2010 will not be considered. Further
instructions on participation are included.

We
are hopeful that the strengthened collaboration at the country level together
with encouraging the next generation of women health advocates will result in
greater progress towards improving maternal health and achieving Millennium
Development Goals 4 & 5.

Best
regards,
Deepa
