Dear all,

MADRE is putting forward Monica Alemán as candidate with compelling
qualifications.

Ms Alemán is from the South, young (under 30), indigenous Miskito with
considerable experience in both northern and southern organizations. Ms.
Aleman is from a GCAP member organization and, in her capacity as MADRE
Program Director and Coordinator of FIMI, has important experience
coordinating NGO efforts at the UN. She is a dynamic leader with clarity and
purpose and a feminist. Her bio follows.

Mónica Alemán, MADRE’s Program Director and International Indigenous Women
Coordinator (FIMI), is a 29-year-old Indigenous Miskita woman from
Nicaragua’s North Atlantic Coast. Educated at the University of Mobile’s
Latin American campus and the Nicaraguan Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ School
of Diplomacy in Managua, Ms. Alemán has continued her education at Human
Rights University in Geneva, the Center for Women’s Global Leadership at
Rutgers University in New Jersey, Columbia University and UNITAR.

Ms. Alemán coordinates MADRE programs with partner organizations in Latin
America, the Caribbean, and Africa, and is responsible for overall program
development with partners worldwide. She also coordinates human rights,
HIV/AIDS, and leadership trainings for women and youth in countries such as
Rwanda, Kenya, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Mexico, and leads educational
delegations to the countries where she works.

Ms. Alemán represents MADRE and FIMI in the international arena and
coordinates MADRE’s work in United Nations conferences. Ms. Alemán played a
key role in the Youth Caucus at the UN World Conference against Racism in
South Africa in 2001. As FIMI coordinator, she facilitated the
participation of Indigenous women from around the world in the UN Commission
on the Status of Women Beijing+10 Review Process in New York in February and
March 2005. And for the annual sessions of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous
Issues she plays a role in guaranteeing the participation of indigenous
women leaders from all over the world.

Prior to all this, Ms. Alemán served as Assistant to the Director of the
Faculty of International Relations and Humanities at the University of
Mobile’s Latin American campus from 1996-1999. She also coordinated
logistics for the Rigoberta Menchu Túm Foundation’s Mesoamerican Conference
for Indigenous Authorities and Leaders in 1998. Additionally, Ms. Alemán
has acted as a liaison between Indigenous organizations on the North
Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua and the communities they serve.

We strongly encourage you to consider her as one of the representatives of
the civil society, both for her background but also for the range of
interest she represents (interest shared by GCAP organizations, but also by
the Feminist Task Force and the Indigenous movement).

Best Regards

Vivian Stromberg
