Queridas amigas,

Hemos estado recibiendo preguntas con cierta consternación por parte de 
muchas de ustedes respecto a la demora en el nombramiento de la nueva 
Directora Ejecutiva de UNIFEM. Como ustedes saben Gita Sen, junto con otras 
cinco candidatas, fue entrevistada por un panel de altos funcionarios de 
Naciones Unidas en noviembre. Cada entrevista duró una hora y fue sumamente 
rigurosa con el fin de conocer la capacidad de las candidatas para un 
liderazgo estratégico. Entendemos que Gita fue la candidata mejor punteada y 
que de hecho fue la única persona recomendada por el panel para ocupar el 
cargo. 

El proceso que ha tenido lugar desde entonces ha estado teñido por los 
considerables intereses de algunos gobiernos del norte y la presión que han 
estado ejerciendo en Naciones Unidas. Esto lamentablemente ha postergado un 
nombramiento que debería haber estado claro y definido inmediatamente 
después de las entrevistas del panel. Nuestra inquietud es que con esos 
intereses en juego, la preocupación central de las organizaciones de mujeres 
respecto a contar con una UNIFEM fuerte y con un buen liderazgo puede ser 
dejada de lado.

Confiamos que se realice el anuncio del nombramiento durante la Comisión 
sobre el Status de la Mujer que comienza la próxima semana en Nueva York. En 
preparación creemos que sería muy importante que ustedes conversaran con 
vuestros ministros o delegaciones enfatizando la idoneidad de Gita para el 
cargo e informándolos sobre el proceso y las razones de la demora. Es 
necesario que las delegaciones comprendan que UNIFEM merece más que 
simplemente tener una Directora Ejecutiva interina indefinidamente. Necesita 
alguien que pueda liderar con visión estratégica, una sólida experiencia en 
el sur y credibilidad entre los movimientos de mujeres. 

Varias de nosotras estaremos en la Comisión sobre el Status de la Mujer y 
confiamos en encontrarnos con muchas de ustedes allí. Las invitamos a que 
participen del panel de DAWN el 25 de febrero de 2008 entre las 13:30 y las 
15:00 horas en el piso 10 del Church Centre.
